If a new year and a new fitter and healthier you is what you want to achieve then why not get involved in a Rusty Rackets session?

Training and using Wimbledon as your goal could give you the motivation and focus you need to reinstate those trainers and work out gear that were destined for a life in retirement.

The Rusty Rackets tennis sessions take place every Tuesday morning at Riddings Leisure Centre on Enderby Road in Scunthorpe and runs from 10am until 12pm.

Alternatively are there are other sports and activities that you can get back in to that you haven’t taken part in since leaving school? Check out the full programme of activities on the council website or you can call the Active Ageing Development Officer on 01724 297255. Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month - Start Making Noise

ovarian cancer

March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Over 7,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year in the UK, and it remains the biggest killer among the gynaecological cancers, with 4,100 deaths each year. It is the fifth most common cause of cancer death in women

Recent research by Target Ovarian Cancer shows an alarmingly low awareness of the symptoms among woman over 50 – who are most at risk. Just one in five can name one of the key symptoms of ovarian cancer.

The three main symptoms in women diagnosed with ovarian cancer are:

  • Increased abdominal size and persistent bloating (not bloating that comes and goes)
  • Persistent pelvic and abdominal pain
  • Difficulty eating and feeling full quickly, or feeling nauseous

In North Lincolnshire, each year on average 20 women are newly diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 12 women die from the disease.

Most ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed at a late stage as the symptoms are hard to recognise at an early stage.

For further information and helpful advice, visit the Target Ovarian Cancer website.

Stroke Association

Stroke

Do you know the signs of a stroke?

The council is working with the Stroke Association and is calling for people across North Lincolnshire to be more aware of the early signs of stroke, and to share the FAST message to help save more lives.

The FAST test identifies the three most common symptoms of a stroke and the right action to take. They are:

  • Face: Can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped?
  • Arm weakness: Can the person raise both arms?
  • Speech problems: Can the person speak clearly and understand what you say?
  • Time to call 999

If you recognise any single one of the symptoms of stroke, in yourself or others call 999. Find out more about recognising the signs of a stroke on our website.

activities

Tell us about your community groups and activities!

The council's Adult Information Service (AIS) maintains a directory of groups and activities for adults, aged 18 and over, who are interested in spending time with people with similar interests.  It might be a lunch club, yoga group, a coffee morning for people suffering with lifelong conditions or even a sporting activity for adults with mobility issues.

Our directory is available online here – so you can have a look for yourself at what is available.

Information wanted:

The AIS is keen to expand this directory, and with your help it could be a great information hub for people across North Lincolnshire. So if you run, or know of, an activity or group that isn’t currently on the list, please tell the AIS about it and help promote what's on for local people.

To share details about your group or activity, please email: ais@northlincs.gov.uk or call on 01724 296607.

If you would like to know what is going on for adults around North Lincolnshire, contact the team and let them know what your interests are and see what they can come up with for you.
