Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

Bowel cancer

North Lincolnshire Council is supporting Bowel Cancer Awareness Month in April and is raising awareness of bowel cancer screening at home for men and women over 60 years-old.

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month aims to raise awareness of bowel cancer screening to improve early diagnosis of the disease.

Bowel cancer is the UK’s second biggest cancer killer but it is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early.

Nearly 98 per cent of people will survive bowel cancer for five years or more if detected at the earliest stage compared with seven per cent diagnosed at the latest.

About one in 20 people will develop bowel cancer during their lifetime, with more than 80 per cent of cancers detected at 60 years of age or older.

In North Lincolnshire there is an average of 125 new cases of bowel cancer diagnosed each year, with slightly higher rates amongst men than women, with the risk increasing with age. Read more on the council website or use the links below to the current campaigns on the Bowelcancer.co.uk website:

The Community Responder Service is a service to support vulnerable adults.

The service will operate across North Lincolnshire and will be available between 8am and 8pm, (with an out of hours service available to registered users) 365 days a year and will build on the existing Community Wellbeing Hubs.

It will deliver services through a targeted approach to those who need it and will enable vulnerable adults to remain active and live independently for as long as possible.

Read the leaflet for more information about who can access the service, what the team provides and when they are available. Community Responder leaflet.

Looking after your smile

smiling old man

Taking care of your general health and your mouth is the key to making the most of your smile.

Brushing your teeth twice a day (last thing at night before you go to bed and on one other occasion) with fluoride toothpaste and having regular check-ups with a dentist can help to keep your teeth healthy. Diet, smoking and drinking alcohol also have an effect on dental health.

A healthy diet is good for your teeth

What you eat and drink can cause tooth decay, so a healthy diet is important for your teeth.

balanced diet includes plenty of fruit and vegetables, as well as starchy foods, such as bread, rice, potatoes and pasta (choose wholegrain versions and eat potatoes with their skin where possible).

You should also eat sources of protein such as meat, fish, eggs, beans or other non-dairy sources of protein, and some milk and dairy foods (ideally lower-fat options).

Only eat small amounts of food and drinks high in fat and sugar. The eatwell plate shows how the different types of food should make up your diet.

Public Health England have produced a 'quick guide to a healthy mouth' guide. Download a copy here.

Lindsey Lodge Hospice - volunteers

hospice

Lindsey Lodge Hospice on Burringham Road has seven shops across North Lincolnshire and they simply couldn’t run without the help of volunteers on the shop floor, behind the scenes sorting stock and at the warehouse with online sales.

One Lindsey Lodge Hospice charity shop in Scunthorpe, Laneham Street, is struggling with an all-time low of volunteers.

The hospice are looking for some outgoing people who can meet and greet people on the shop floor and also sort, steam and tag stock to put on the shop floor.

Full training is provided for volunteers and it’s a great way to gain new retail and social skills to put on your CV and make new friendships for life.

Do you have some time to spare? Find out how you can get involved.

Carers' Support Centre

befriending

The Carers’ Support Centre is always looking for volunteers to help with driving, befriending, counselling, therapy treatments, admin work – practically anything!

So, if you have a few hours to spare why not give Sharon Wright, our Volunteer Co-ordinator, a ring on 01652 650585 for a chat.

The Bon Ami Friendship Service is particularly valuable and as long as you are a sympathetic listener, this could be for you. Volunteers offer informal support to Carers who are vulnerable and need that bit of extra time and the opportunity to talk with someone who is not going to criticise or judge them. Find out more from Sharon.

Expenses are paid and training is available, and Sharon will offer ongoing support.

Listening to feedback from Carers who are working, we have decided to hold the next Caring with Confidence sessions at the Redcombe Lane Centre from 6pm to 9pm starting on Wednesday 5 April for four weeks. Tea is available at 5.30pm. Why not give it a go? Ring Rosa on 01652 650585 for more information and to book your place.

12 to 18 June is National Carers Week. There will be various events taking plaec and information points so watch out for the next issue to see when and where they will be.

Don't forget the Charity Ball on Friday 16 June at Forest Pines Hotel & Golf Resort. If you’d like to come along please ring 01652 650585 to reserve your tickets.
