There are a variety of articles with something of interest to everyone. Some articles may not be directly of use to you but maybe you could pass the information on to people you know?

Carers are the unpaid hereos looking after family, friends and neighbours on a daily basis. Read our interesting article on support for carers.

If you're looking for something to do over the coming weeks check out the What's On section for lots of ideas. If cycling is your thing you'll be interested to see that the Tour of Britain is holding a stage here in September.

Maybe music strikes a chord with you, check out the 'Cabinet of Curiosity' tour on 19 and 20 June. See article for more details.

Carers' Week - 12 to 18 June

Carers' Week takes place annually to raise awareness of the role of carers, highlighting the challenges they face and the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

The campaign is supported by thousands of individuals and organisations who come together and organise activities and events throughout the UK, drawing attention to just how important caring is.

Caring can be very rewarding, but without the right support it can have a negative impact on your health, career, finances and relationships. When you are caring for someone, it is really important to ensure that you look after yourself too.

Where can you get advice and support?:

  • The Family Carers' Team, North Lincolnshire Council  on 01724 298393 or visit the council website
  • Carers' Support Centre, Brigg on 01652 650585 or visit their website
  • Visit the CarersUk.org

What is a carer friendly community? Find out by visiting CarersUK.org. If you are aware of an organisation within your community that is 'carer friendly' why not recommend them to others. Recommend now

Men's Health Week - 12 to 18 June

hazardous waist

Image courtesy of the Men's Health Forum

Led by the Men's Health Forum, the purpose of Men’s Health Week is to raise awareness of preventable health issues and encourage men and boys to seek professional advice for health related problems.

The Men’s Health Forum will focus on belly fat. Why? Because it’s the type of fat that’s bad for your health and men are more likely to have it. It’s a problem because belly fat lurks not just beneath the surface but also gets down deep and surrounds your vital organs. Regardless of your overall weight, a large amount of belly fat increases your risk of:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Sleep apnea
  • Premature death from any cause
  • High blood pressure

So men, you need to get those tape measures out. If you have a waist measurement over 37 inches (94cm), you are at increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer, stroke and erection problems. If it's over 40 inches (102cm), you are at a considerably increased risk of all these. The measurement is not the same as your trouser size. Measure your stomach at the belly button.

Changing Places toilets - national campaign

Changing places logo

Thousands of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, as well as other disabilities that severely limit mobility, cannot use standard accessible toilets.

Standard accessible toilets (or "disabled toilets") do not provide changing benches or hoists and most are too small to accommodate more than one person.

Although the numbers are increasing, there are still not enough Changing Places toilets across the country.

Providing these toilets in public places would make a dramatic difference to the lives of thousands of people who desperately need these facilities.

There is a national campaign to increase the number of Changing Places toilets across the country. See how you can join the campaign by visiting their website

There is also a useful Changing Places toilet map you can register with to help you locate Changing Places toilets in lots of towns and cities when planning a journey.

Fostering

fostering

During Fostering Fortnight (8 to 21 May 2017), the Fostering Team sat down with one of the local foster carers, Jodie from Scunthorpe, to find out her experiences of being a foster carer in North Lincolnshire.

Jodie commented that, "There are so many questions people are always dying to ask me when they find out I'm a foster carer", so she was asked to tell us the answers to some of those commonly asked questions.

You can read Jodie's full story on the council website now. Interested in becoming a foster carer yourself? Head over to our website for more information.
