Stoptober

Stoptober SW

Stoptober is back for 2017 and will continue to encourage smokers across England to make a quit attempt during October. Stoptober has driven almost 1 million quit attempts to date, with thousands more smokers likely to take part this autumn.

Harming your health

1 in 2 long-term smokers die from a smoking-related disease. Smoking causes around 90% of lung cancers and is also linked to cancer in other parts of the body, heart disease, lung disease and other serious conditions.

Smoking and your family

Over 80% of cigarette smoke is invisible and odourless, so no matter how careful you think you're being your family still breathes in more harmful chemicals than you think. This puts your children at risk of serious illness, including meningitis, cancer, bronchitis and pneumonia.

Read more at ONE YOU website.

Recycle your green 'Tour of Britain' bike

Green ToB bikes

Motor vehicle students at North Lindsey College are looking to take inspiration – and parts – from these green bicycles to create soapbox cars.

Soapbox cars, or gravity racers, are motorless vehicles which are often raced down a hill against the clock or against other competitors in a soapbox derby. The students will be looking to put their creations to the test in November when the college hosts its own soapbox derby around their campus on Kingsway in Scunthorpe.

If you would like to donate your green bike to the students at North Lindsey, please get in touch with Kate Lonsdale at the college on kate.lonsdale@northlindsey.ac.uk or call 01724 709420, to arrange collection or drop-off.

Old or unwanted bicycles can also be taken to your nearest Household Recycling Centre.

Breast Cancer Awareness month

breast cancer ribbon

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and North Lincolnshire Council is highlighting the importance of breast awareness, education and research to help cut the number of deaths each year to breast cancer.

Throughout the month we are raising awareness of breast cancer and the symptoms to look out for. We are working with the Humberside Breast Screening Service to deliver awareness sessions at British Steel and North Lindsey College. For lots of useful information and advice visit the Humberside Breast Screening Service website.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK. Every year nearly 55,000 people are diagnosed with the disease in the UK, that’s the equivalent of one person every 10 minutes.

Although the majority of people are successfully treated, nearly 12,000 people die from it every year.

Visit the Cancer Research website for lots of useful information and advice on dealing with cancer.

If you would like to read more; download this information leaflet

Becky Nevill from Scunthorpe is 44 years old and was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2016. Read Becky's story of her journey fighting cancer.
