Movember

Movember 2017 - Will you be taking part?

GROW YOUR MO!

1 November marks the beginning of the month-long Movember, raising the profile of Men's Health Awareness Month.

Having started from humble beginnings in 2003, the Movember Foundation has grown to a global movement of over 5 million men and women. Since then, it has raised a massive £443 million, investing in over 1,000 projects. The Foundation focuses on the biggest health problems that affect men in the UK today: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and poor mental health.

The Foundation is committed to raising awareness and strategic investment in men's health, enabling them to live happier, healthier, longer lives.

To do your part, grow your moustache: for thirty days, your moustache will turn you into a walking, talking billboard for men's health. You can read more and donate to the Foundation by visiting their website.

Self-Care week - 13 to 19 November

senior women

Self-care means knowing how to keep healthy and well by making choices that can support you to do so, such as cutting down on sugar,  building some physical activity into your daily life, getting  help to stop smoking,  and eating a healthy diet.

There is useful help online from NHS Choices as well as  the North Lincolnshire Council Health and Healthy Lifestyles page  and a variety of phone apps you can use to help you self-care by keeping your self  healthy such as the Public Health England One You apps which include ‘couch to 5k, drinks tracker and easy meals. Visit the One You website for more details.

Making changes to your lifestyle can reduce your risk of developing a long term condition including as heart disease and Diabetes.

For people who already have a long term condition there is the  Expert Patients Programme in North Lincolnshire which is a 6 week programme promoted by North Lincolnshire Council and North Lincolnshire NHS to help people manage their long term condition. The course is available to anyone 18+ who have one or more long term conditions including Diabetes, heart disease, depression, COPD and Arthritis. Protect yourself - Get the flu vaccine

flu new

The flu season is approaching, so it's important that we are all protected by getting vaccinated.

The vaccine not only protects you, but protects others by reducing the spread of the flu in communities if there is an outbreak. It also helps those who cannot get the vaccine, such as those with compromised immune systems.

The injected vaccine is offered free on the NHS to those deemed at risk, which includes people who are:

  •  Aged 65 or older
  •  Pregnant
  •  Aged between 6 months and 65 years, who have a serious condition.
  •  Living in a residential home
  •  In receipt of a carer's allowance
  •  The main carer of an elderly or disabled person, whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill.

To get the vaccine, simply call in at your GP, or inquire at a local pharmacy.

Remember: you need to be vaccinated each year, as the flu strains change. Further information can be found on the NHS website.

    Men In Sheds

Men In Sheds is a service run by certain local branches of the national charity Age UK.

The project aims to support older men who want to get together, and share or learn new skills. Men can meet at the sheds to undertake a variety of activities, such as woodworking, metalworking, art and computers - essentially a youth club for the over 50s!

Many men find it easier to socialise when using their skills to do something, so the sheds are a chance to learn new skills, or just to pop along and have a chat to make some new friends over a drink!

Half-day sessions take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and cost only £2.50 per session! The morning session runs from 9am to 12 noon, while the afternoon runs from 12 noon to 3pm. The cost also includes tea, coffee and biscuits!

     Call 01724 849 819 for more details.
