Know the signs of a stroke - 'Act FAST'

Stroke association

Know the signs of a stroke and ‘Act FAST’

North Lincolnshire Council is joining the Stroke Association to call on people to be more aware of the early signs of a stroke, and to share the FAST message with their friends and family.

The FAST test identifies the three most common symptoms of a stroke and the right action to take:

  • Face: Can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped?
  • Arm weakness: Can the person raise both arms?
  • Speech problems: Can the person speak clearly and understand what you say?
  • Time to call 999

If you recognise any single one of the symptoms of stroke, in yourself or others call 999 straightaway. Download the FAST poster for more information.

To find out more information about the FAST campaign and find out what support is available, go to Stroke Association website.

Loneliness and isolation

Loneliness

Feeling lonely is a normal human emotion  and is simply a sign of wanting contact with people. It's not just older people who feel lonely it can affect younger people too and it can often happen because of a change in circumstances, such as:

  • becoming a new parent
  • facing empty nest syndrome
  • retirement from work
  • long-term illness or disability
  • bereavement
  • family breakdown – divorce or separation.

Your community and neighbourhood

Find out what local activities are being planned and get involved: walks, singing groups, book clubs and bridge. For example, Contact the Elderly and the University of the Third Age have a wide range of local social groups and activities across the UK. North Lincolnshire childrens' centres have lots going on too; not just for children.

Cervical cancer screening

cervical cancer

North Lincolnshire Council is urging women to have a smear test, especially those aged between 25 and 49 as figures reveal over a quarter of women in this age group are not attending.

In 2016, in North Lincolnshire only 74 per cent of eligible young women had a smear test compared to 80 per cent of women aged 50 to 64.

For more information about cervical cancer and the NHS cervical screening programme, visit the NHS website.

There is also lots of useful information on the Jo's Trust website including videos in a variety of languages on the guide for cervical screening.

Do you know the symptoms to look out for? Read this leaflet to find out more.

    Carers' Support Centre

    Carers support

The Carers' Support Service provides valuable support to around 4,500 carers in North Lincolnshire.

The new arrangement brought together two existing carer services, which provided separate support for adults and children/young people with disabilities, into a single all-age service. This approach will build on the current services which are currently available, but with the benefit that people will only need to register with a single organisation.

The new all-age carer service has been commissioned by North Lincolnshire Council and NHS North Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and offers a range of high quality services including training, access to support groups, volunteer visiting, befriending and alternative therapies.

The service is delivered by the Carers' Support Centre and enquiries can be made directly on 01652 650585. Information on a full range of services will be available shortly on the Carers Support Centre website.
