Dear Washingtonians,
This week, at the National League of Cities (NLC) Congressional City Conference, I was proud to lead a national discussion on affordable housing. As the Chair of the NLC’s Housing Taskforce, I shared the important work we are doing to produce and preserve affordable housing here in the District and also called on the federal government to step up and invest more in our nation’s infrastructure, including our housing.
The next day, I joined community members and residents of Ward 8 to cut the ribbon on the new Busboys and Poets in Anacostia. This project, which also includes a new home for the Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative, delivered a long-awaited, long-requested amenity to Ward 8 – a new full-service restaurant in historic Anacostia. Of course, along with the restaurant comes new jobs and opportunities for our residents.
Both of these events - the discussion on housing with the National League of Cities and the opening of the new Busboys and Poets - represent the progress our city has made as well as the work that lies ahead. On Monday, March 18, at my 2019 State of the District Address, I look forward to sharing my vision for how we can do more both nationally and locally to ensure Washingtonians have the housing, jobs, and opportunities they need to live healthy, happy lives.
