High School Growth Panel at May public meeting
The SBOE heard from five panelists in our continuing exploration of how to best measure high school growth at this month’s public meeting. State Board members engaged in discussion with panelists on understanding the limitations of high school growth metrics like median growth percentile (MGP) and value-added models (VAM), as well as additional ways to think about capturing high school growth. District high school principals provided additional insight on how their students’ growth should be represented. OSSE will bring a proposal to the State Board at our June 5 working session related to the inclusion of a high school growth measure in the statewide STAR Framework.

ESSA Task Force Moves to Recommendations
ESSA Task Force May 2019
In May, task force members convened to continue their work on developing recommendations to submit to the State Board in June. Representing residents from all eight wards of the city, SBOE has been leading community and stakeholder engagement work related to ESSA.
After two years of sustained community engagement related to the District’s implementation of the federal law, the ESSA Task Force will convene its final meeting on Tuesday, June 11. The task force will make recommendations on equity in education in the subject areas of academic rigor, leadership, and school resources and funding in the form of a final report to be delivered to the State Board on June 19, 2019. Ward 8 Safe Passage Working Group
Since January 2019, the Office of the Student Advocate has facilitated meetings for the Ward 8 Safe Passage Working Group. The group convenes government, education, health and safety, and community leaders to address and take action regarding community violence impacting the well-being of our students and our communities. Their final meeting for the 2018–19 school year was May 29 at Ballou STAY from 6–8 p.m.
Ward 1 Special Education Workshop
Questions about special education in D.C.? On Saturday, June 8, the Office of the Student Advocate, in conjunction with Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Brianne Nadeau, Ward 1 State Board of Education Representative Emily Gasoi, Ward 1 Education Council, and OSSE's State Advisory Panel on Special Education, will host the Ward 1 Special Education Workshop at Columbia Heights Education Campus (3101 16th Street NW) from 2–4 p.m. Live Spanish translation will be available.

Anacostia HS Wins 47th Annual Citywide Georgetown Street Law Mock Trial Competition
Anacostia HS Mock Trial Team honored at May public meeting
At this month’s public meeting, the SBOE recognized Anacostia High School for winning the 47th Annual Citywide Georgetown Street Law Mock Trial Competition. Every year, the Georgetown Street Law program trains law students to teach law-related concepts to high school students in the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County. This school year, over 230 high school students from 11 schools in D.C. and Prince George’s County worked with Georgetown Law students and mentor attorneys at the Washington Lawyers’ Committee to learn criminal, constitutional, and contract law; trial advocacy; and trial procedure. The final round of the 47th Annual Citywide Georgetown Street Law Mock Trial tournament was held on April 11 at the international law firm of Sidley Austin, LLP. The Duke Ellington School of the Arts competed against the Public Safety Team from Anacostia High School and while both teams presented a compelling case, students from Anacostia High were ultimately chosen as the tournament champions.

OSSE Multilingual Conference June 7-8
Calling D.C. educators, service providers and school leaders! Have you registered for the first Multilingual Learner Conference, Empowering Success Through Language Learning, taking place on Friday and Saturday, June 7–8, 2019 at the Kellogg Conference Hotel at Gallaudet University. This conference will bring together hundreds of pre-K through grade 12 dual-language and/or English-language learner program teachers, leaders, and service providers from all D.C. schools for two days of professional development events.
