City of Lakes

Dear Neighbor,

For many, last Friday marked the unofficial start of summer with school ending for the year, my family included. Our son Charlie is in for a busy summer of camps and Minneapolis Kids before 3rd grade starts in the fall. While he's busy exploring and learning about the world, we have some exciting new initiatives we are leading here at City Hall.

The first is the Biennial Budget Charter Amendment. This is something I have been working on for almost two years now and I am excited to announce that our City's Charter Commission just approved it last Wednesday. The next step of the process includes a public hearing in our Intergovernmental Relations Committee. Once that date is set I encourage everyone to come and voice your support for an initiative that will greatly improve our budgeting process. Look for more information from my office, soon.

The second item I am proud to be leading is a set of worker protections I'm working on with Council Members Fletcher and Cunningham, introduced as a Wage Theft Prevention Ordinance, including concerns for freelance workers. The bulk of this work was shaped by the Minneapolis Workplace Advisory Committee (WAC), which is made up of representatives from small and large businesses, labor, and other groups. The WAC spent most of 2018 and into 2019 helping to develop this policy, and gave a presentation to the Public Health, Environment, Civil Rights, and Engagement (PECE) Committee in March.

This ordinance will allow the City to enforce the soon-to-be state law which ensures workers get paid for the work they do in Minneapolis.
