Diversity is being celebrated in North Lincolnshire this July

Pride

July is Pride Month across North Lincolnshire; how are you showing your pride this July?

To mark the start of North Lincolnshire Pride Month 2019, the Mayor and Young Mayor of North Lincolnshire will be raising the Rainbow Flag – the traditional symbol of the LGBT+ community – in Church Square, Scunthorpe on Monday 1 July from 12pm. Everyone is invited to join us celebrate this special occasion.

The Rainbow Flag will fly proudly in Scunthorpe town centre throughout July. Last year, the Rainbow Flag, or Pride Flag, was raised in North Lincolnshire for the first time outside the council’s former Civic Centre building.

If you are interested in holding or organising a Pride Event in North Lincolnshire and would like some advice or assistance, please contact our Communities team on communities@northlincs.gov.uk.

Let us know how you’re celebrating Pride this July. You can join in with the conversation on Twitter using the hashtag #everyonesinvited.

Sarcoma Awareness Week 2019

Sarcoma Awareness Week takes place from 1-7 July 2019.

Sarcomas are rare cancers that develop in the muscle, bone, nerves, cartilage, tendons, blood vessels and the fatty and fibrous tissues. They can affect almost any part of the body, on the inside or the outside.

Because sarcomas are so rare, it is important that awareness is raised and this is what Sarcoma Awareness Week aims to do.  If more people knew what sarcoma was, they would get that lump checked out earlier. If more GPs knew more about the signs of sarcoma, they could refer people earlier. The earlier sarcoma is diagnosed, the greater the chance of successful treatment.

Find out how you can get involved in Sarcoma Awareness Week.

If you or a loved one have been recently diagnosed with sarcoma you might have a lot of questions about what happens next and what is happening right now.  There is a wealth of information on the Sarcoma UK website.  You can also find a local support group.

The UK support line can be reached on on 0808 801 0401 or supportline@sarcoma.org.uk

Safety in the sun

summer

Although we are now in the summer months, we are yet to experience much of the lovely sunny weather we enjoyed last year.  You never know, however, just when it might arrive so it’s best to be prepared.  Many of us embrace the warm weather, but for some more vulnerable individuals, the higher temperatures can pose a risk.  Remember to look after yourself, loved ones and neighbours who you feel may struggle to cope in the heat.  There is more information about staying safe in the sun on the NHS website.

Children and Young People's Activity Guide

There are lots of activities for children, young people and their families to do in North Lincolnshire that are free and low cost.  Use the online calendar to discover what’s on for your family over the coming weeks.

If your child has a Special Educational Need or Disability (SEND) there are some activities listed which are specifically aimed at your family. You can find them by clicking on the ‘SEND’ tag. You can also access Short Breaks. These provide an opportunity for a disabled child or young person (0-18 years old) to take part in free fun activities.

However, our aim is to help any child to access the activities they are interested in and remove barriers wherever possible. If your child would like to access one of the activities listed on our guide, but you are not sure if their needs will be met by the activity provider, please call us on 01724 296629 to discuss your needs. We will liaise between you and the activity provider to try and make the activity as accessible as possible for all.
