Walk the Way to Health

walking

The Walking the Way to Health initiative aims to encourage you to walk more in your own community.

Being physically active on a regular basis can significantly improve your health and fitness and walking is ideal for building exercise into your everyday life.  It is also an ideal way to see the natural environment around you.

With Walking the Way to Health, led walks are free and most are no longer than 3 miles each.  There will be two trained walk leaders on each walk (one with first aid equipment).  There is no need to book, just turn up on the day!

Have a look at the walk timetables:

Do you know an everyday local hero?

Local hero

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service would like to find everyday local heroes.

This year, members of the public are being asked to nominate their local hero. The top three nominations will receive a complimentary ticket to attend the ceremony, where the winner will be crowned.

Share your stories and nominate your hero.

Remain independent in your own home with Telecare

telecare

Do you have a relative or friend who is a little unsteady on their feet?  If they fell over in the bath or shower, would they be able to get up again or would they have to struggle until help came?

Maybe you aren't as agile as you used to be or you're a little forgetful these days?

Perhaps you live alone and are wary of answering the door to strangers?

Would you feel safer if you knew help was at hand when you needed it?

'Telecare' is assistive technology that gives you the peace of mind to live independently. You may recognise it as the pendant alarm worn by elderly relatives, but it's much more than that. It's friendly, reliable assistance at the touch or a button, but it's also a sophisticated sensor system that monitors heat, movement, water and carbon monoxide. It can even automatically contact help when you've had a fall.

Telecare costs from as little as the price of a store bought coffee per week (plus set up fees), and local company Care Call can get you started with everything you need. If you receive a care package from North Lincolnshire Council, you may already be eligible for Telecare, just speak to your allocated worker.

Respite care at Lindsey Lodge

Lindsey Lodge

Respite is a way for carers to take a break from caring. If friends and family provide a significant amount of care this may enable them to have a break from caring, for example, to take a holiday.

Lindsey Lodge has a dedicated nurse-led respite bed in a beautifully furnished room with en-suite facilities.

Anyone who would be eligible to receive services from Lindsey Lodge Hospice can book a respite bed. You don’t need to be attending already.

To book a respite bed you, your family or professionals involved in your care at home can contact Lindsey Lodge to enquire about vacancies.

Anyone eligible for our services is eligible for two weeks minimum respite per year, with an option for an extra week if the bed becomes available at short notice. The bed cost is £700 per week, inclusive of all nursing care and meals. It is booked from Thursday at 2pm to the following Thursday at 10am, this is to ensure a relaxed and flexible admission and discharge process.

Please call 07396561692, or email llh.enquiries@nhs.net for further information, or to make a booking.

Support if you're feeling lonely

lonely

Most of us will feel lonely at some point but there are some experiences common in older age that can make it more likely.

Independent Age have produced a guide, 'If you're feeling lonely', which suggests things you could try which could help to reduce loneliness, as well as information about where to look for more help.

You can also read more about what to do if someone you know is lonely, it’s often hard to know what to do but the main things to remember are:

  • Make yourself available
  • Check how the person is feeling
  • Be dependable

Locally there are community wellbeing hubs which are there to provide advice and support for vulnerable adults in North Lincolnshire.  If you are feeling lonely or isolated then please feel free to contact your local hub on the numbers below.  Or just drop in and say hello.  You will always be given a warm welcome.

Children playing

Children and Young People's Activity Guide

There are lots of activities for children, young people and their families to do in North Lincolnshire that are free and low cost.  Use the online calendar to discover what’s on for your family over the coming weeks.

If your child has a Special Educational Need or Disability (SEND) there are some activities listed which are specifically aimed at your family. You can find them by clicking on the ‘SEND’ tag. You can also access Short Breaks. These provide an opportunity for a disabled child or young person (0-18 years old) to take part in free fun activities.

However, our aim is to help any child to access the activities they are interested in and remove barriers wherever possible. If your child would like to access one of the activities listed on our guide, but you are not sure if their needs will be met by the activity provider, please call us on 01724 296629 to discuss your needs. We will liaise between you and the activity provider to try and make the activity as accessible as possible for all.
