Greetings -
Over the past few days, I have received several inquiries about the School Board’s Monday night meeting and potential changes to FCPS’ existing boundary policy.
First, I want to assure you that Monday’s meeting was part of the School Board’s ongoing examination of FCPS' existing boundary policy. No changes to the policy were adopted on Monday and no changes will occur before there is extensive public engagement. Regrettably, there is some misinformation circulating which has created understandable fear that a policy change is set to occur without public engagement. Please be assured that, as your Braddock District School Board Member, I am deeply committed to robust accountability, transparency, and community engagement on all issues impacting our schools, as this is essential to good governance and public trust.
With respect to school boundaries, my family and I experienced the negative effects of unpredictable and frequent changes while briefly living in another state many years ago. As a result, some of the key reasons we selected Fairfax County to raise our three sons were not only FCPS' reputation for academic excellence, but also strong neighborhood schools and stable attendance boundaries. In addition, I personally experienced a disruptive boundary change as an elementary school student. These two experiences have helped shape my belief that boundary changes should be limited in scope whenever possible, and utilized to address growth and building capacity.
In closing, I look forward to future public dialogue. Your feedback is very valuable to me, and I appreciate your engagement on this issue.
