JAG Specialists Receive State, National Honors

Indiana’s Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) specialists gathered in Indianapolis on June 28 to learn new techniques designed to continue their success in helping young Hoosiers improve their employability skills and graduate from high school. Additionally, more than 50 educators and schools were recognized for their efforts over the previous school year, which enabled JAG Indiana to earn the prestigious “5 of 5” statewide award for the second-consecutive year.

Several of these specialists also received national honors two weeks later at at the 36th Annual JAG National Training Seminar in Orlando. Additionally, Indiana's JAG program formally received its "5 of 5" Award and other honors including the "Scholarships Secured" 1st Place National Award and the "Peak Performance" Award. Stay tuned to next month's issue of Engage, Align, Advance for full details of these well-deserved honors.

JAG is a state-based national non-profit organization dedicated to reconnecting students with barriers academically by helping them on their path to graduation. Indiana’s program graduates more than 94 percent of participants and many students choose to continue their education after high school. More than 15,000 students have participated in Indiana’s JAG program since 2006. Currently, more than 5,500 students participate in JAG through 110 programs throughout Indiana, making Indiana’s JAG program the largest in the nation.

Donation Funds Statewide Robotics Program

Guggenheim Life and Annuity has generously agreed to fund year one of the Statewide Robotics Initiative with a $290,000 to TechPoint Foundation for Youth.  With this gift, TechPoint Foundation will be able to fund an innovative robotics program for 400 elementary schools and serve 40,000 Hoosier students. This cross-sector partnership puts Indiana on the map as the first state in the nation to make a commitment to providing equal access to high-impact STEM programming for all its students.

Former Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and Guggenheim Vice President Karen Maginn discussed the program last weekend on Inside INdiana Business ...watch now

IYI Releases Postsecondary Pathways Issue Brief

The Indiana Youth Institute recently outlined postsecondary education and career options high school students have after graduation and the seven considerations they should keep in mind when making career and related postsecondary education decisions. The Postsecondary Pathways Issue Brief takes an in-depth look at students transition from high school to college, technical training, or a career.

report

Per the requirements of Senate Enrolled Act 301 (SEA 301), the Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD) utilized the best sources of information available to date to prepare the occupational demand report summarized in the Occupational Demand Report (cover letter - pdf | full report - xls). The report consists of data and figures gathered by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Occupational Information Network (O*NET). The information utilized is recognized as the national standard and is derived from national sources.

To better refine our understanding of Indiana’s occupational demand, DWD will be operationalizing a state occupational demand projection system throughout the duration of 2016. Additionally, recognizing that training requirements often vary by region and by employer, DWD is surveying Indiana employers to determine what education and training they require for particular occupations. These two sources of information will enable DWD to assess Indiana-specific training needs at a much more granular level.

IN-PIN

The Indiana Pathways Innovation Network, or IN-PIN, offers invaluable support to further the development and implementation of career and STEM pathways for forward-thinking organizations working to improve outcomes for adults and youth learners.

Regional Lists of Top 50 Jobs in Indiana

Every two years, the DWD releases regional Hoosier Hot 50 Jobs lists highlighting top jobs around the state. These regional lists are modeled after the statewide jobs list released and contain projections of the 50 most high-wage, high-demand jobs in each of Indiana’s 12 economic growth regions over the next decade.
