Over the last quarter, DEEL released two grants supporting college and career readiness programming for Seattle K-12 students:
-
Opportunity and Access programs provide expanded learning and college and career readiness opportunities for youth disproportionately impacted by systemic inequities in education. Funding will increase the capacity of community organizations supporting young people to build skills that help them succeed in school, graduate on time, and transition to college and careers.
-
Summer Learning Enhancement funds expand or enhance summer academic and enrichment programs for Seattle K-12 students. Programs focus on development of college and career readiness skills and experiences that prepare students for success in school.
The application windows for both are now closed. Visit our website for more information about DEEL's funding processes, including timelines for notification of selected applications and awards.

Addressing Student Mental Health from A Culturally Responsive Angle
“There is an enormous need for behavioral health services, and families face long waits to schedule a behavioral health intake in the community. School-based clinics provide an immediate response to this need through mental health appointments, in-language outreach, social and emotional learning, book clubs, and youth summits focused on mental health themes to help teach healthy coping strategies,” said Ana Short, International Community Health Services Behavioral Health Provider at Seattle World School SBHC.
DEEL is partnering with Seattle Public Schools, Public Health – Seattle & King County, students, and community organizations to increase access to culturally responsive mental health services at Seattle Public Schools. As part of this work, a Student Mental Health Supports (SMHS) pilot focused on increasing access to clinical and non-clinical approaches to care is in progress at five FEPP levy partner schools: Aki Kurose and Denny middle schools, and Rainier Beach, Chief Sealth, and Ingraham high schools.
In the coming weeks, DEEL will announce new investments strategies stemming from the 2023 budget.
Family Vaccine Information & Resources
COVID-19 vaccines continue to be the best tool to help keep our schools and communities safe. As of June 21, children age 6 months and older can now get the COVID-19 vaccine.
Student COVID-19 Vaccinations Jumped from 57% to 80% at Seattle Public Schools, According to CDC
December 2021-June 2022, Public Health – Seattle & King County (PHSKC) led an effort with Seattle Public Schools (SPS), and community organizations to increase vaccine uptake among school communities with low vaccination rates through pop-up clinics, community partnerships, and and multilingual outreach to students & families. Within a six month period, vaccination rates climbed to 80% among Seattle Public Schools students aged 5-18 years old. According to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Levy funded School-Based Health Centers (SBHC’s) were foundational in increasing COVID-19 vaccine education & access in King County to help keep students healthy, in school, and ready to learn.
