According to an Afterschool Alliances report, Washington, D.C. is ranked first in the top 10 states for afterschool, in large part due to the fact that its participation rate of 24 percent is higher than any state in 2020, with more than 21,000 children taking part in a program. D.C. also saw a 50 percent reduction in the rate of children alone and unsupervised in the hours afterschool, dropping from 26 percent in 2014 to 13 percent in 2020. Additionally, parents rank programs highly, with more than 9 in 10 D.C. parents reporting that they are satisfied with their child’s afterschool program. Learn more here.

While DC government is still in the final stages of the FY24 budget formulation, My Afterschool DC (an expansion of investments in after school seats and the OST Office’s capacity) passed through the committee budget markup but the committee of the whole included a recommendation to scale back the staff required for the My Afterschool DC web platform. My Afterschool DC represents our continued investment in the OST Office’s grantees and youth, and it is our down payment on afterschool for all children, youth, and families across the District that want it, starting with priority elementary schools. We anticipate that Council may make cuts to this initiative in the budget they will present for a first vote on 5/16.
If you support the OST investments preservation, expanded investments in our children, youth, and families, and the OST FY24 budget (inclusive of My Afterschool DC), and if you want to ensure that your voices are heard, we encourage you to engage with members of the DC Council now, and especially between the first vote on the budget (5/16) and the final vote on the budget (5/30).
