Message from the Director
Governor Gavin Newsom issued a proclamation declaring May 2023 as "Small Business Month" in California. At DGS, we are proud to play a large role in empowering small businesses, because we recognize the impact small businesses have in supporting local economies and communities across California.
The DGS Office of Small Business and Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise Services (OSDS) is California’s lead entity on certification, outreach, education, and advocacy for state procurement and contracting. OSDS works to ensure the state meets the goal of spending 25% of contract dollars with California certified small businesses – a goal that was recently codified into state law via AB 2019. DGS makes a concerted effort to expand outreach through strategic partnerships, events and our supplier diversity initiative to increase small business and microbusiness participation in state contracting.
In honor of "Small Business Month," I would like to recognize the hard work that small businesses contribute day in and day out. I would also like to acknowledge our partners that continue to promote state contracting opportunities for small businesses in their communities as a way to help grow California's economy. Thank you!
Ana M. Lasso Director, California Department of General Services

Sustainability Spotlight: Recycling
DGS is committed to diverting recyclable materials from entering landfills. DGS has developed and administers comprehensive integrated waste management programs that divert solid waste products through reduction, recycling and composting activities. Food waste is one of the single most deposited materials dumped in California landfills. In 2022, DGS' Facilities Management Division estimates that it recycled nearly 1,000 tons of food and green waste combined. Wherever possible, DGS is contributing to reducing, recycling and reusing.
Please see how DGS is contributing to a cleaner and safer California by visiting the CalRecycle website – CalRecycle Home Page. And see what others are doing around the world to support the Global Recycling Day on May 18: About - Global Recycling Day.
