Dear Franconia District Families,
I wanted to highlight some time-sensitive opportunities within Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). See below for details.
- The FCPS Audit Committee is seeking two new community members to serve on the Audit Committee. Applications are due by May 26. Some duties include reviewing the annual audit plan, audit reports and management responses, and reporting to the Board monthly, etc.
- Fairfax County Public Schools’ Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee (MSAOC) is seeking nominations, by June 15, for their newly established Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award. This award honors the legacy of Dr. Bussey by celebrating the efforts and impact of those who work to redress inequitable systems and practices in FCPS.
- Congratulations to the Class of 2023! See below for the upcoming Franconia District Graduations. I am looking forward to celebrating with you soon!
This weekend is Memorial Day weekend. I hope you take a moment to remember those brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives while serving in the U.S. Military.

Fairfax County School Board Seeks Audit Committee Applicants (Deadline: May 26, 2023)
Fairfax County Public Schools invites applications from community members interested in serving on the School Board Audit Committee. Applicants must reside within the boundaries of Fairfax County or Fairfax City. The Board will be appointing two committee members for a term ending June 30, 2025.
Applicants cannot be a current FCPS employee and must be able to understand general government processes as well as technical and complex financial reporting issues. Applicants should be knowledgeable about internal controls, financial statement audits, management and operational audits, and risk. The deadline to submit an application has been extended to Friday, May 26, 2023. Get more information about the Office of the Auditor General and submit an application here.
Equity Award Nominations Open
The Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award recognizes advocacy by FCPS staff or community members on behalf of students who are marginalized or underserved. Applications are being accepted through Thursday, June 15.
Recipients will receive awards at FCPS’ Equity Symposium on Tuesday, July 25. Visit the award website to learn more about the award’s namesake, the nomination process, and criteria.

The end of the school year is fast approaching and our seniors have been enjoying proms, senior picnics, and other end of the year festivities.
