Education and Training
The new trauma center verification standards from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma will be completed by September 2023. Pediatric Readiness is part of these new standards, which apply even to adult-only certified trauma centers.
The new standards require all trauma centers to evaluate their pediatric readiness and develop a plan to address deficiencies. According to the standard, pediatric readiness “refers to infrastructure, administration, and coordination of care, personnel, pediatric-specific policies, equipment, and other resources that ensure the center is prepared to provide care to an injured child.”
To help prepare agencies for pediatric readiness, especially if they are not typically treating pediatric patients, the ASC standard references the toolkit developed by the Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC).
The Colorado EMSC website now hosts free training on Human Trafficking for EMS, ED Healthcare Providers, and non-clinical staff. The training consists of five modules that take about 10 minutes each to complete. Free CE is available (through Children's Hospital Colorado) upon completion of the training.
Eighty percent of trafficking victims report that an emergency health care provider saw them in the first six months of being trafficked. Therefore, ED and EMS personnel are uniquely positioned to recognize persons who may be trafficked and link them to resources.
The training can be found at: Human Trafficking | EMSC Colorado.
Prehospital Seizure Management in Children: An Evaluation of a Nationally Representative Sample
Many prehospital pediatric patients with seizures are given inappropriately low doses of benzodiazepines. Use of a low dose of benzodiazepine and use of benzodiazepines other than midazolam is associated with additional benzodiazepine usage.
Research findings have implications for quality improvement needs in pediatric prehospital seizure management and future research. Read the full article here.
This free series of cases features low-fidelity simulations that allow your teams to engage in the first 5-10 minutes of an emergency scenario.
You will use your equipment and resources in your clinical environment or in the convenience of a virtual environment to practice nontechnical skills.
There are three ways in which the simulation can be delivered:
-
SimBox Original: Low-fidelity manikin + video and tablet-based resources for use in situ.
-
SimBox+ (SimBox PLUS a telefacilitator): SimBox was adapted for remote or underserved areas and/or limited access to content or simulation experts with a remote facilitator.
-
TeleSimBox: Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, SimBox was adapted to meet the demands for virtual learning platforms and continuous education for learners of all levels. This version targets nontechnical skills.
