Dear Colleagues,
Even though summer has unofficially begun and many people are off on vacation, we’re going to have a busy week here at the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE).
Starting off the week will be two standing committee meetings this afternoon, June 5, from the Kentucky United We Learn Council, including the Accelerating Innovation and the Building a Bold New Future with Communities committees. You will be able to watch both of those meetings on the KDE Media Portal.
At 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday, June 6, KDE staff will be presenting at the Interim Joint Committee on Education about the assessment and accountability system. This meeting will cover a comparison of federal and state accountability requirements, as well how the U.S. Department of Education’s peer review process works. Those sessions are viewable on the Kentucky Legislative Research Commission’s YouTube channel.
The next Kentucky Board of Education meeting will take place Tuesday and Wednesday at the KDE offices, 300 Sower Blvd in Frankfort. It will be an exciting meeting where we will be welcoming our two newest board members, Julie Pile and Diana Wood.
Pile, of Florence, will serve as an at-large member. She replaces Alvis Johnson, whose term has expired. Pile’s term will expire April 14, 2026. Woods, of Lexington, is a retired superintendent. She also will serve as an at-large representative. She replaces Claire Batt, whose term has expired. Woods’ term will expire April 14, 2026. You can read more about both Pile and Woods on Kentucky Teacher.
The Kentucky Board of Education also will be saying goodbye to Joanna Stevens, who served as the teacher ex officio member for the past year, and student ex officio member Joud Dahleh of Boone County. We will be announcing our new teacher and student ex officio members tomorrow. You will be able to watch the KBE meeting on the KDE Media Portal.
Later today, we will be releasing updated guidance for the bills passed during the 2023 legislative session that contained an emergency clause. You will find more information on Senate Bill 150 in the updated guidance, which will be available on KDE’s Legislative Guidance webpage.
Kind regards,
Jason E. Glass, Ed.D.

New Transportation Director Training
Being a transportation director is not easy. One of the missions of the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) Pupil Transportation Branch is to help school districts navigate the knowledge and resources needed to run their transportation operations as smoothly as possible.
KDE will be providing a five-day training that will be packed with information, networking and knowledge sharing. The class will encompass laws, regulations, policies and procedures, kindergarten and preschool transportation, McKinney Vento, special needs transportation, T-Codes, SEEK overview and records retention. In addition, directors will receive training on the driver training and inspector programs. The training will equip directors with an overview of their responsibilities from the KDE perspective.
The class is limited to 40 participants due to the size of the room. The training will be from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. ET. A finalized schedule will be sent prior to class.
All transportation directors and superintendents are welcome to attend, however, priority will be given to new directors and superintendents coming into transportation after July 1, 2023. Six EILA credits per day will be provided. To receive credits, you must remain during the entire class period; partial credit will not be available.
