Message from Director Lasso
In many parts of California and across the nation, extreme heat is taking a toll this summer. Intense heat waves are not just unpleasant – they present a high health risk for vulnerable individuals such as those who have chronic illnesses or are pregnant, those who work outdoors, unhoused people, and the youngest and oldest among us.
To better prepare all Californians to cope during extreme heat, Governor Gavin Newsom launched the Heat Ready CA campaign and the California Department of Public Health created a Heat & Summer Safety toolkit. Both offer resources and tips to stay safe. During times of extreme heat, remember these simple practices:
- Stay Cool: Take cool showers and seek air-conditioned spaces. Wear light clothing, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen outdoors.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink water early and often.
- Stay Connected: Check on each other – particularly high-risk individuals – and use a buddy system when working in the heat.
- Stay Informed: Check your local news for weather forecasts, extreme heat alerts, and cooling centers. Recognize heat-related illness signs and seek medical attention if needed.
Please share this important information with colleagues, friends and family. Here’s hoping the rest of your summer is fun and safe!
Ana M. Lasso Director, California Department of General Services
