Hoosier Homecoming: Remembering the Centennial in a Modern Way

James H. Madison is a member of the Indiana Bicentennial Commission, a history professor at Indiana University, Bloomington, and author of Hoosiers: A New History of Indiana.

Hoosiers marked their one-hundredth birthday in 1916 with joyful celebrations.  Indiana’s counties and towns organized pioneer reenactments, speeches, and dinners. The menu at one event included Tecumseh Tomato Bisque, hot Tippecanoe wafers, Corydon celery hearts, and Pride of the Wabash corn soufflé.

The capstone centennial celebration came in October, before the winter could strike hard in Indiana. Governor Samuel Ralston, Gene Stratton Porter, and other notables beat the drums of publicity to gather Hoosiers in Indianapolis. Poet James Whitcomb Riley urged Hoosiers from afar to come back to “the dear old Home.” “Don’t say you can’t come,” Riley said, “but rather that you can’t stay away.”

The Homecoming in the capital city that fall of 1916 was a grand affair.  National and state dignitaries spoke. The centerpiece was “The Pageant of Indiana,” performed six times with a cast of 3,000, some carrying the new state flag with its torch and nineteen stars.  Performances began with the capture of Vincennes from the British and ended with celebration of Studebaker and Haynes automobiles, the gas boom factories, and new farm plows.

For Indiana’s two hundredth birthday party on October 15 Hoosiers will gather again in Indianapolis. A highlight of the Homecoming day will be the conclusion of the Bicentennial Torch Relay.  The Torch will have travelled over 3,000 miles along Indiana roads and byways through all ninety-two counties, lighting the way for two thousand plus torchbearers and many proud volunteers and onlookers.

TapSnap

TapSnap has taken the photo booth "out of the box," literally!  This photo kiosk, complete with instant printing and email and social media sharing capabilities, enhances the  photo experience!

Anne Wessel, owner of TapSnap 1184 in Indianapolis, provided a photo experience that more than 10,000 guests enjoyed during their visit to the Bicentennial Pavilion at the Indiana State Fair.

"Hoosiers are proud to be from Indiana and they exhibited their enthusiasm at the photo kiosk every day at the State Fair by celebrating Indiana's 200th birthday.  They wore party props for their pictures and also added many of the favorite digital props and backgrounds, such as the face-bombing cow by the cornfield, or Indiana's red cardinal on the Bicentennial stamp.  It was a fun experience for them as guests and me as the photographer to share this historical event!"

At Hoosier Homecoming you can take part in the fun! There will be two TapSnap kiosks set up to provide you with a fun memory of the historic day.

Re-enactors

There will be several re-enactors at Hoosier Homecoming. You'll meet some of your Hoosier favorites like Garfield, Indiana's first Gov. Jonathan Jennings and Abraham Lincoln!

Danny Russel has worked as a professional actor for nearly thirty years -specializing in historical characters for the last 15. He said playing Abraham Lincoln is a tremendous responsibility.

"He stands on the highest mountain with the brightest torch, having reassembled the dis-United States while ending slavery forever," Russel said. "I'm rather humbled to keep his legacy alive.  Hilarious, heartbreaking and full of humanity, he embodies all of life's richest emotions.  That makes him a joy, and a challenge, to portray!

Folks adore his frontier humor, stories about Mary and the boys, prairie lawyer years, political aspirations, learning about Civil War tragedy and triumph, and of course those remarkably eloquent speeches.  And did you realize we're approaching TWO important bicentennials this year?  Indiana won statehood in December of 1816.  Lincoln's family left the slave state of Kentucky (since Indiana rejected that "peculiar institution" as part of its constitution) and arrived in Spencer County in December of 1816!"

Re-enactors combine historical, theatrical and educational components so that the general public can be entertained, and learn something as well!

Statehouse Tours

Jennifer Hodge is the Coordinator for the Capitol Tour Office. She is excited to share the stories of the Indiana Statehouse with guests at Hoosier Homecoming!

"Our Indiana State House is the People’s House," she said. "It is the seat of state government and a magnificent building that houses a combination of state history and current events.  During the Hoosier Homecoming celebration your Executive offices, Legislative Chambers and Judicial Courtrooms want you to visit and see where they serve you.  The Capitol Tour Office staff will be on hand to tell the stories and explain the history of the beautiful building.

It’s your building, it’s your government!  Come and let us tell you all about it!!"
