Diversity in Clinical Trials
Washington state just passed a bill to help ensure more equitable access to clinical trials. The bill makes Washington a leader in improving diversity in trials—and provides a roadmap for other states who want to tackle the issue. The purpose of 2SHB 1745 is to increase participation and representation of diverse demographic groups in clinical trials of drugs and medical devices. The Community Collaborative will serve as the community engagement body to support DOH in writing a report on implementing this body of legislation. Please reach out to Anna Kelsey with any questions: Anna.Kelsey@doh.wa.gov.

Reducing Lead Exposure for Afghan Newcomers
One notable public health challenge that Afghan newcomers face before and after resettlement is exposure to lead and the risk of lead poisoning. Seattle and King County Public Health (SKCPH) has been partnering with Afghan Health Initiative (AHI) to prevent childhood lead poisoning in King County, Washington. Their efforts include home visits and a pressure cooker exchange program.
Learn more about their efforts in reducing lead exposure.

What is Long Covid?
Some people who have been infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 can experience long-term effects from their infection, known as Long COVID or Post-COVID Conditions (PCC). Long COVID is broadly defined as signs, symptoms, and conditions that continue or develop after initial COVID-19 infection. This definition of Long COVID was developed by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in collaboration with CDC and other partners.
Covid-19 Hotline Sunsets
Following a successful three-year collaboration, the Washington State Department of Health’s (DOH) COVID-19 Hotline partnership with Washington 211 (211) will end June 30. Beginning in July, COVID-19-related questions will be answered directly by the DOH Information Line by calling 800-525-0127. This transition marks a significant milestone as COVID-19-related inquiries received continue to decrease.
Advancing Equity for AA & NH/PI
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NH/PI) communities in the United States—including South Asian and Southeast Asian communities— faced increased xenophobia, religious discrimination, racism, and violence. While the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency has ended, response and recovery efforts must continue to meet the needs of diverse communities. The Office of Minority Health recently released best practice resource guides in supporting the very diverse AA & NH/PI communities.
