2016 Winter Volunteer Opportunities

Join King County Parks and help improve some of the awesome parks, trails and natural areas within the 28,000 acres of Your Big Backyard! Check out the calendar below for upcoming volunteer events over the next five weeks.


Native tree and shrub planting events

Come volunteer to help improve King County Parks' stream corridors and urban forests. Spend some time planting native trees and shrubs along our major rivers or in our urban parks. Native trees and shrubs improve the area for wildlife and water quality.

To join a planting event, please register with the volunteer coordinator listed after each event.

Events are Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

November 19

Lake Geneva Park (Federal Way/Auburn)

Help make Lake Geneva Park a healthier forest! Join us in planting trees and removing English ivy.

Cedar Grove Natural Area (Renton)

Come see the last of the fall colors along the Cedar River!  We will be planting an area to help out salmon and wildlife.

Tolt MacDonald Park (Carnation)

This is a family event. Groups and individuals welcome!  Join the Snoqualmie Indian Tribe, Mountains to Sound Greenway and Stewardship Partners for a planting event along the Tolt River. Work is an effort to establish a healthier forested native plant buffer along an important slough channel of the river in a culturally important area for the Tribe. Light refreshments, tools and gloves are provided. An overview of the site and project will be given, including why it is important to the Tribe and local salmon recovery.

Marymoor Park Sammamish Rowing Association (Redmond)

Join King County Parks and Sammamish Rowing Association volunteers to plant native trees and shrubs and remove Himalayan blackberry from the restoration site near the boathouse along the Sammamish River.

Marymoor Park Birdloop Trail (Redmond)

Please join Eastside Audubon Society for their monthly work party. This is an ongoing volunteer service that greatly benefits birds and wildlife in Marymoor Park.

Log Cabin Natural Area (Issaquah)

Help out the recently planted trees and shrubs by mulching around them. Log Cabin is a special spot with over a mile of Issaquah Creek and lots of wildlife.

Taylor Mountain Forest (Hobart)

This event will finish up the plantings in the in-holding at Taylor Mountain Forest near Maple Valley. This is a great opportunity to see and plant the last in-holding area of the site.

Vol Planting at 3 forks

December 17

Cecil Moses Memorial Park (Tukwila)

Join EarthCorps and King County Parks in restoring Cecil Moses Memorial Park along the Duwamish River. EarthCorps is supporting restoration efforts at this great park through a Community Partnership Grant.

Save the Date!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day ~ Jan. 16

Multiple volunteer events will be happening on Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 16. A schedule of events will be sent out as we get closer to the date.


 Backcountry trail work events with WTA

Deer at MMP

Give back to those trails that you love! Join King County Parks and the Washington Trails Association this fall and winter to rebuild and repair backcountry trails.

Learn to retread a trail, build a turnpike, or solve drainage problems.

Events are Tuesdays - Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

* Please note that these events require hiking to the site and events are limited to 20 people and typically are 6-12 volunteers in size.
