George Washington University Health Insurance Counseling
Project (HICP) and State Health Insurance Program (SHIP), funded by the DC
Office on Aging, ranked fifth in overall performance in the country. The
program, which has been supported by DCOA for more than 20 years, provides
education and assistance to Medicare-eligible individuals, their families, and
caregivers.
GWU Health Insurance Counseling Project educates residents
on Medicare programs to assist them with making informed health insurance
decisions. Located within the Health Rights Law Clinic at the George Washington
University Law School, HICP has a professional and full-time staff that
provides counseling services for Medicare beneficiaries to help them navigate
the array of programs.
DCOA and SHIP work collaboratively to increase awareness of
the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB) program, a Medicaid benefit that saves
participants an average of $5,000 each year in Medicare cost sharing and
prescription drug expenses. Enrollment in the QMB program also allows
participants who initially declined Medicare Part A, Part B, Part D or
supplemental benefits to enroll immediately and without penalty.
DCOA values its partnership with HICP and looks forward to
continuing to assist District residents in saving out-of-pocket health care
costs.
