Community Collaborative

Our June 26 Community Collaborative meeting was interactive and packed with community insight. We reviewed three potential Department of Health legislative proposals. We invite you to review comments or contribute to the Mural boards (click “view as a visitor” twice) on these topics:

• Community engagement
• Behavioral health
• Health eating active living

Decision packages will be developed in the next couple of weeks, and the Collaborative will have more opportunities to share input if these proposals move forward.

Health Equity Zone update: Partners in East Whatcom developed an outreach plan to share about the Health Equity Zones Initiative and what it means for their rural community. Read more about their work and join their efforts.

Funding Opportunities

Is your organization in one of the highlighted areas on the map? Better Health Together is offering grant-writing stipends to small community-based organizations applying for regional, state, or federal funding. Learn more and apply through 2024 or while funds last.

The King County Veterans, Seniors, and Human Services Levy (VSHSL) will fund an organization(s) to assist low-income or disabled individuals in applications and appeals for income-generating benefits and programs.
Applications due: August 9 at 2 p.m.

Best Starts for Kids Healthy and Safe Environments Request for Proposals (RFP) is open.
Applications due: July 23 at 2 p.m.

Best Starts for Kids Domestic Violence Emergency Response Pilot Request for Applications (RFA) is now open.
Applications due: August 13 at 2 p.m.

Washington State Dept of Commerce’s Building Communities Fund awards grants to tribes and community-based organizations for 25% of eligible capital costs to acquire, construct, or rehabilitate nonresidential community and social service projects. Applications due: August 22 at 5 p.m.

Resources

Extreme heat is continuing throughout the state. Dial 2-1-1 or use the statewide online resource here to find cooling centers near you. Language assistance is available.

Washington’s 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is two years old! Learn how this life-saving service is responding to more callers, expanding crisis response teams, and investing in more treatment options for common mental health issues.

DOH testing kiosks provide COVID-19 and flu tests, along with the opportunity to access additional healthcare supplies. See a map of kiosks.

Review the schedule of upcoming Care-A-Van Vaccine Clinics or request a clinic in your community.

In Case You Missed it

Did you know the Department of Health had a program to train, recruit and sustain a diverse public health workforce? Read the Workforce Pathways Program newsletter to learn more about the program, its next phase and 13 Pathways Professionals transitioning into positions at DOH or other state agencies.

Dr. Umair Shah, Washington State Secretary of Health, and Dr. Vivek Murthy, U.S. Surgeon General, speak about the epidemic of loneliness and isolation in “Rx for A Lonely Nation."

The Surgeon General issued an advisory on firearm violence, declaring firearm violence in America a public health crisis.

Better Health Together (BHT) was selected as one of 20 organizations nationwide to receive funding from the US Aging Center of Excellence.

A Mother Jones story, “States Could Help Disabled People Survive Climate Change—By Involving Them,” details why governments and agencies should collaborate with Centers for Independent Living (CILs) to save lives in climate events.

Seeking Members

Department of Commerce’s Homelessness Assistance Unit is seeking members for their committee. Review the application and fill out the application if interested.
