Message from the Director

At the Department of General Services, I am happy to share that two new members of our leadership team have recently joined us. Lou Butera was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom to serve as the State Printer with the Office of State Publishing. Mr. Butera comes to DGS with a wealth of experience from the private sector printing world, having most recently worked as President of Operations at Direct Marketing Solutions, where he managed multiple facilities for their print and mail business.  We have also brought on Daniel Dias as our new Chief of the Office of Fleet and Asset Management. Mr. Dias brings over 20 years of state government experience and most recently worked at the California Public Utilities Commission, where he led the Management Services Branch in statewide Administration Operations for the last five years.  We are excited to welcome them both to the DGS team and know the experience they bring to their positions will greatly benefit our customers and staff.  Ana M. May Lee State Office Complex named Best Real Estate Project of the Year by Sacramento Business Journal

The Sacramento Business Journal has recognized the May Lee State Office Complex as its Best Real Estate Project of the Year.  The 1.25 million square foot site houses seven different state departments with room for up to 5,000 employees. Across its four towers, the complex boasts a childcare center for up to 120 kids, a conference center, 25-room training facility, and a 300-seat auditorium that will be open for public use alongside ground-level retail space.

57th Annual Native American Day

Join us on Friday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the California State Capitol to celebrate the rich history and culture of Native Americans. This year’s theme is “Recognizing 100 Years of Citizenship and the Fight for the Right to Vote: 1924-2024.” This event is free and open to the public. Visit exhibitors, network with attendees, and listen to speakers. The DGS Office of Small Business and Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise Services (OSDS) will have an exhibitor booth - come stop by and say hello!

Sustainability Spotlight

The DGS Office of Sustainability (OS) facilitated a Power Purchase Agreement that began generating 2,372.78 KW AC of clean energy in January 2024 at the RJ Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego. That’s enough energy to power about 1,200 homes! This California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation facility, which is located on 12.65 acres of land, is expected to save more than $4.6 million of taxpayer funds over the 20-year agreement.

OS Project Directors oversaw Forefront Power, LLC who installed the 7,056-module solar array which tracks the suns movement across the sky from dawn until dusk to maximize system efficiency. This facility is located within the San Diego Gas and Electric Utility District.

California Commission on Disability Access Meeting

To promote disability access in California through dialogue and collaboration with stakeholders including the disability and business community and all levels of government. Executive Committee Date: October 2 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.  Full Commission Meeting Date: October 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The meeting notice and agenda can also be found on the California Commission on Disability Access website.

California Building Standards Commission Meeting

The California Building Standards Commission produces sensible and usable state building standards and administrative regulations that implement or enforce those standards.  Date: October 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The agenda and meeting details are forthcoming and can be found on the Building Standards Commission website.

We Are Hiring!

Under the general direction of the Principal Architect, the Supervising Architect position in the DGS Division of the State Architect is responsible for the development, supervision, oversight and execution of the Sustainability Program for the Division of the State Architect. The Sustainability Program prescribes California Green Building Standards Code (CALGreen) regulations and provides technical resources and research to regulate sustainable schools and ensure compliance with the California Green Building Standards Code and the California Energy Code and other governing regulatory requirements. The position is also responsible for the development, supervision, oversight and execution of the gas valve certification program.
