TRAFFIC ADVISORY: River View Park Sidewalks and Trails Reopened as Broadway Bridge Demolition Continues

Project completion scheduled for fall 2025

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 12, 2024) The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) announces that a portion of the sidewalks and city trails in River View Park have reopened to pedestrians, ahead of schedule, as part of the ongoing Broadway Bridge demolition project in Frankfort.

The Broadway Bridge has been closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic since 1993.  A section of the sidewalks and city trails in River View Park were closed in August as a safety precaution to protect park visitors after debris from the sidewalk and railing fell.

A section of the Kentucky River was closed in August after the Transportation Cabinet inspected the bridge and worked with the City of Frankfort and the U.S. Coast Guard on public safety measures. At the cabinet’s request, the U.S. Coast Guard established a temporary safety zone at Kentucky River mile markers 65.5 to 66, restricting all vessels from traveling under the structure. A portion of the river restrictions were removed in November for the cleared channel under Span 4. Buoys mark where vessels may navigate safely, while passing under other sections of the bridge remains prohibited.

Contractors have completed the removal of Spans 1 through 4 of the Broadway Bridge, and work continues with the removal of Span 5. The entire demolition project is scheduled for completion by fall 2025.
