Governor signs proclamation naming February as Gifted Education Month in Kentucky

(FRANKFORT, KY) – Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has signed a proclamation declaring February as Gifted Education Month.

Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman presented the proclamation during a ceremony at the Capitol Rotunda on Feb. 13. Coleman was joined by Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) Deputy Commissioner of Education Thomas Tucker, representatives from the Kentucky Association for Gifted Education, educators, students and families who advocate for gifted children across the state.

In his proclamation, Beshear highlighted the importance of gifted education in helping students develop critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills that will prepare them to become future leaders in their communities and beyond. He also commended Kentucky’s educators for their dedication to providing innovative and challenging educational opportunities for gifted learners.

“At KDE, we are proud to support gifted and talented students, their families and the dedicated educators who provide advanced opportunities for acceleration and enrichment,” said Associate Commissioner Gretta Hylton of KDE’s Office of Special Education and Early Learning. “Collaboratively, we are paving the way for a more promising future for everyone.”

Tucker said the proclamation highlights the importance of providing specialized support and opportunities to these students, ensuring that they continue to grow, thrive and reach their fullest potential.

“We are focused on providing meaningful and vibrant learning experiences for all of Kentucky’s public school students,” he said. “I want to personally thank the hundreds of educators across the Commonwealth who work with our gifted students on a daily basis, helping to develop the gifts of the next generation of visionaries and innovators who will lead our state.”
