No-contact advisory issued for Port Washington Narrows and Sinclair Inlet
Previous
advisory for Dyes Inlet lifted but Mosher Creek advisory still in effect
KITSAP
COUNTY, WA — The Kitsap Public Health District has issued a no-contact advisory
for Port Washington Narrows and Sinclair Inlet through Sun., Feb. 12 due to a
combined sewer overflow (CSO). Signs are
being posted at public access points including Lion’s Park.
According to the City of Bremerton Public Works and
Utilities Department, the 23,000 gallon CSO occurred on Monday morning when pumps didn’t
turn on due to a power surge. Because the tide was going out at the time of the
CSO, the advisory includes Sinclair Inlet.
Combined
Sewer Overflows are a
diluted mixture of
untreated sewage and stormwater
that are discharged into Puget Sound.
They usually occur as a result of stormwater entering the sanitary sewer system
during heavy rain storms. For more information on Bremerton’s efforts to
reduce CSOs, visit the City of Bremerton’s website.
The
no-contact advisory for Dyes Inlet that was issued last Mon., Jan. 30 has
been lifted. However, bacteria levels remain high in Mosher Creek and that
no-contact advisory remains in place. The Health District will continue
monitoring Mosher Creek for bacteria.
During a no-contact advisory, the public
is advised to avoid contact with the water in the affected area. This
means no swimming, wading, or types of water play where water could be
swallowed or get in the mouth, nose or eyes. People should also avoid direct
skin contact if possible, and immediately wash with soap and water if they have
exposure to the water.
An ongoing closure is in place for
shellfish harvesting in Port Washington Narrows and Sinclair Inlet due to
pollution. For up-to-date information on
shellfish harvesting throughout Kitsap County, visit www.kitsappublichealth.org/shellfish.
