Update on additional pipe investigation work on Oakton St. and Dodge Ave.

The contractor excavated over the old gas main on Dodge Ave.  They safely tapped into the main and then cut it open in order to use a camera to inspect the interior of the pipe.  Based on this inspection a second excavation was made on Dodge Ave.  Similarly, the contractor excavated and exposed the old gas main on Oakton St.  They safely tapped into the main.  However, this main was partially filled with water.  Based on this, the internal inspection was limited and a decision was made not to excavate a second location on Oakton St.

During all of this work, the contractor was collecting soil and air samples.  The results from these samples will be used as part of the City's evidence in the federal lawsuit against Nicor and ComEd.  Samples of the actual gas main pipe and flanges are also to be collected.  Currently, the two sides are working out the details of how to collect and store the pipe samples.

Following the collection of the pipe samples, the contractor will backfill the excavations and then restore the pavement on Dodge Ave. and the parkway on Oakton St.
