Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

DC is a thriving, world-class city full of arts and culture, restaurants and nightlife, shopping and theater, parks and sports, and so much more. There has never been a better time to live in, work in, or visit the nation's capital. We welcome nearly 1,000 new residents each month, the unemployment rate continues to fall in every part of the city, and the District is the safest it has been in years.

As we celebrate our city’s continued growth, we must also ensure that our government is working in the most effective and efficient way possible. This means streamlining government functions and processes and responding to requests and concerns quickly and seamlessly. It also means working hand in hand with the community to make Washington, DC a more attractive place for residents in all wards to live, work, and play.

This weekend, I will kick off Back to Basics DC – a two-week celebration of the day-to-day work that keeps our city going. Every day, thousands of government employees and community members work behind the scenes to keep Washington, DC running – from tree watering to trash collection, they do the work that when done well goes unnoticed, but when not done or done poorly, we all notice. During Back to Basics DC, we will highlight their work, look for opportunities to do better, and share information about how the community can help us be more efficient.

On Saturday, we will start by celebrating many of DC's hardworking employees at our 10th annual Truck Touch at RFK, and on Monday we will keep things going with the announcement of a new app that the city will be using to ensure that trees around DC are watered properly as well as a graffiti removal event with MuralsDC.

Follow the next two weeks on social media using #BackToBasicsDC.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
