Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

By now, you've seen our video, you've heard the hype, and - if you're like me - you've explained to countless people why the best city for Amazon HQ2 is obviously Washington, DC. Today, we are just one week away from joining cities across the country in submitting a proposal to become the future home of Amazon's second headquarters.

With our growing tech scene, talented and diverse workforce, and inclusive environment, Washington, DC is an ideal location for Amazon HQ2. People come to Washington, DC because they know this is a city where they can start and grow their businesses, a place where they will have access to some of the most talented people and top universities in the world, and because we are a city that is committed to supporting entrepreneurs and investing in our workforce.

Next week, as we put the final touches on our proposal, my team and I will continue to highlight why Washington, DC is the best city for Amazon HQ2. We will kick off #ObviouslyDC Week on Monday by celebrating Shop Made in DC, a new brick and mortar store devoted to selling products made in the District. In addition to bringing 50,000 new jobs, a DC-based Amazon HQ2 would also bring thousands of new customers for our thriving local businesses.

Throughout the rest of the week, we will continue to highlight the advancements in our workforce development programs that are putting more Washingtonians on pathways to the middle class. Over the past year, we launched new job training programs like Solar Works DC, opened the DC Infrastructure Academy, launched DC’s Inclusive Innovation Incubator, the nation’s first affordable co-working incubator focused on diversity and inclusion, and teamed up with the Washington, DC Economic Partnership to create the Pathways Scholarship, a first of its kind initiative to provide tech training, mentorship, and employment services for under- and unemployed communities in our city. Next week, we will unveil new projects in Wards 7 and 8 that will help us build on these efforts and spread prosperity to every corner of the city.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

AlleyPalooza 6.0

AlleyPalooza

Yesterday, Mayor Bowser launched AlleyPalooza 6.0, the Administration’s citywide effort to repair or renovate alleys across the city. During AlleyPalooza 6.0, the DC Department of Transportation (DDOT) will improve eight alleys in each of the District’s eight wards. More than 60 alleys have already been renovated or repaired in 2017, and since Mayor Bowser launched AlleyPalooza in 2015, nearly 400 alleys have been improved.

Residents can follow the progress of AlleyPalooza 6.0 at ddot.dc.gov and on DDOT’s social media channels (@DDOTDC).
