The Ward 8 Works (W8W) Initiative hosted an event on October 13th discussing unlawful background as a barrier to employment. The discussion was held at the Barry Farm Recreation Center.  The event was designed to respond to concerns regarding arrest and conviction history, in order to help participants become successfully employed. Panel participants included the Public Defender Service of District of Columbia, the Mayor’s Office on Returning Citizen Affairs, the General Service Administration for St. Elizabeth’s West Campus, DC Department of Employment Services and others.

The discussion covered:

  1. Effect of Background Issues (Misdemeanors, Felonies including violent offenses) on Employment
  2. Expungement vs. Record Sealing
  3. Accessing Your Criminal Record
  4. DC's "Ban the Box" Law
  5. Experiences Getting/Keeping Employment (and even clearances)
