Bon Voyage

We’d like to announce that two long-time Food and Nutrition Services staff are retiring. Ben Durand and Joe Lee will retire on December 4 and December 11, respectively. They will be greatly missed for all the support and guidance they provided to nutrition program sponsors in interpreting policies and complying with regulations. Over their many years of service at the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), they have answered thousands of phone calls and provided invaluable resources to both program staff and sponsors in all our child nutrition programs. We wish them both a happy retirement and we also ask for your patience during this transition period.

Technology Innovation Grant (TIG) Work is Underway

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) awarded a three-year Technology Innovation Grant (TIG) to MDE in August 2017, to develop software for Administrative Reviews of Minnesota’s Child Nutrition Program (CNP) sponsors. The project will build on Administrative Review software already developed by the Michigan Department of Education. In our first year of the project, MDE has finalized the contract with Michigan and begun the process of building the new software to fit the needs of MDE staff and Minnesota’s CNP sponsors. The software is due to be fully implemented by September 2020 and will benefit CNP sponsors by streamlining data entry required for the Administrative Reviews. The software will also allow MDE staff to quickly access information about CNP sponsors during their Reviews. If you have questions or would like more information, please email Debrah Firkus or call her at 651-582-8775.

Administrative Review List for October 2018 - September 2019

The Administrative Review List for 2018-19 is now available on the State Agency Monitoring/Guidance webpage. This list includes the names of Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) sponsors (including child care centers, adult care centers, emergency shelters and At-Risk Afterschool Meals sponsors) who are due for an administrative review in the 2018-19 program year. CACFP staff schedule the reviews throughout the year, and will call sponsors four to six weeks in advance to schedule their review. To get ready for the review, use the Preparing for a Child and Adult Care Food Program Review document.
