City of Lakes

Dear Neighbor,

IMPORTANT NOTICE: On the evening of Wednesday January 30th there is a hearing for three upgraded liquor licenses scheduled. The hearing will still be held, but in conversations with City staff we encourage you to submit comments online per below.  Feedback received will be taken into account, no matter what format.

Please do not risk your well-being to attend due to the extreme cold. Stay safe!

The first few weeks of 2019 have sped by as we dig into our policy work for the new year. Affordable housing continues to be a top priority. With my colleague Jeremiah Ellison's policy efforts on a renter’s bill of rights this year, we’ll be holding my office’s first ward forum of the year to bring you a local conversation specifically on renters’ rights and to learn about your experiences and desires for that type of legislation. I'm excited that Council Member Ellison will be joining us for this forum.

A key focus of my leadership at City Hall is how we evaluate city departments and innovate them to work better for the public. Over the last few years, my office has been working closely on every department’s performance, which ties closely into our city’s budget process. Our current, annual budget process no longer fits the needs of the City as the depth and breadth of the work continues to grow. We struggle to keep up with a constant cycle of increased funding of additional demands, without room to evaluate existing programs and funding levels. I’ve been working hard on how and what it would take to make better budgeting decisions, and one of these is to move to a two-year budgeting process instead of a year-to-year cycle. If you haven’t been following this effort, I will take steps to detail it out in our February newsletter as the pieces come together.

I continue to work on public safety strategies including what you’ll see below about Vision Zero, and am nearing the end of an audit on our Police Department’s hiring process- how it works and how every part of the process and training might be improved. We’re also taking on how we as a local government could address wage theft of workers, something I expect to spend a significant amount of time on this year.

Stay warm and safe. I look forward to the year ahead as your Council Member. As always, please feel free to reach out to my office with questions or concerns!

Warm regards,

Linea
