Even with today’s wintry weather, keep in mind that spring is just around the corner. There are many important things happening in FCPS during this time of year. Our School Board will be making final budget decisions in just a few short months.

I wanted to share with you a few items below. There are two parent surveys to help us understand you and your child's thoughts about the school environment and school health services. See details below.

Learn more about volunteering with GrandInvolve, and the PALS partnership program we have with the Fairfax County Police Department. Also learn more about our Office of Auditor General and sign-up for our Audit Buzz.

I look forward to seeing you at one of these upcoming events.

Parent Survey on School Health Services

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians.

Electronic versions of the survey forms may be accessed at:

School Health Services Survey – Parents 2019: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/85QGH7C

Parent Survey on School Environment

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is studying how school environments relate to discipline practices in FCPS. As part of the study, families should have received a survey from FCPS’ Office of Research and Strategic Improvement. The surveys have been translated into multiple languages and were sent out via eNotify on Friday, February 8th. We ask that you complete the survey by Friday, March 8th.

A small number of classrooms at all middle and high schools, as well as selected classrooms at a sample of elementary schools will participate in the study’s student survey. Student surveys will be administered at school.

The surveys are designed to help FCPS understand your and your child’s thoughts about the school environment and how discipline is approached in their school.

We encourage you to participate in this important survey to help FCPS understand what is working well and where we can improve.

FCPD PALS (Police at Lunch in School) Program

FCPD

The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) has partnered with Fairfax County Public Schools to help build positive relationships with students in elementary schools.

The pilot originally began with Fairfax County Police Officers visiting Riverside and Fort Hunt Elementary School every Wednesday to have lunch with students. This program has now expanded to include additional elementary schools in the Lee and Mount Vernon districts: Lorton Station, Gunston, Lane, Island Creek, Hayfield, Springfield Estates, Franconia, Forestdale and Cameron.

Channel 4 News did a story on the PALS program, click here:

The students are enjoying their new lunch buddies with the Fairfax County Police Department.

Office of Auditor General and the Audit Buzz

The Fairfax County School Board is responsible for ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, by visitation or other means, and for ensuring efficient operations (Code of Virginia 22.1-79). The School Board directs the Superintendent in these matters by adopting the budget and establishing School Board policy. Together the Superintendent and the School Board are responsible for attaining the school division’s mission. To aid them in fulfilling their responsibilities, the School Board has formed an Audit Committee and has established the Office of Auditor General (OAG). To learn more about this office and to meet our Auditor General, Esther Ko, go to: https://www.fcps.edu/school-board/office-auditor-general

In addition, the Office of Auditor General provides periodic newsletters of their activities throughout the year. You can sign up to receive their newsletter by going to FCPS News You Choose to subscribe.
