Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Last week, as we closed out Black History Month, I traveled to Selma, Alabama with Congressman John Lewis and a congressional delegation. The pilgrimage was an opportunity to commemorate and honor the heart wrenching and powerful events that led to the Voting Rights Act.

I came back home ready, certain, and more determined than ever to keep fighting for DC statehood. The lesson we were reminded of in Alabama: even in the face of great adversity, we press on.

Selma

Now, we carry that message with us throughout Women's History (or HERstory) Month. We remember why we keep fighting for women's equality - for social and economic justice; for better health outcomes for mothers and babies; for safe and affordable access to health care; and to close the pay gap, which disproportionately affects women of color and has persisted for too long.

In DC, we understand that our city's history is black history, it is women's history, and it is black women's history. And, until all Washingtonians get the fair shot they deserve, together, we press on.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
