Construction on I-69 in Grant County to Begin Monday
Tentative timeline will include lane closures and traffic shifts

GRANT COUNTY – The Indiana Department of Transportation announces a tentative timeline for a three-year construction contract on I-69 through Grant County. Work on the project, which includes 6 miles of pavement replacement on I-69 as well as several bridge projects, is scheduled to begin on or after Monday, March 25, weather permitting.

In 2019, contractors will work in the northbound lanes in the following areas:

  • Concrete pavement replacement between mile markers 263 to 271
  • Replacement of the I-69 bridge over S.R. 18
  • Bridge deck repair on the I-69 bridge over Tippy Ditch, 1.14 miles north of S.R. 18
  • Bridge deck overlay on the I-69 bridge over Baker Ditch, 3.24 miles north of S.R. 18
  • Bridge deck overlay on the I-69 bridge over the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks and C.R. 450 N, 4.65 miles north of S.R. 18

Next week, weather permitting, motorists can expect lane restrictions on I-69 between mile markers 263 to 271 to allow contractors to prepare for a traffic shift in mid-April, when temporary barrier wall will be placed. At that time, traffic will be reduced to one northbound lane.

In late spring, contractors will restore two lane traffic in both directions, with the utilization of lane shifts and crossovers in the median constructed in 2018. At that time, one lane of northbound traffic will be shifted to the southbound lanes of I-69 while contractors continue to reconstruct the northbound lanes. In early fall, contractors will again restrict I-69 to one northbound lane through the project limits. This configuration will allow the contractors to complete the northbound work in advance of the winter months.

In 2020, contractors will focus on the southbound lanes to complete the following:

  • Concrete pavement replacement between mile markers 263 to 271
  • Replacement of the I-69 bridge over S.R. 18
  • Bridge deck repair on the I-69 bridge over Tippy Ditch, 1.14 miles north of S.R. 18
  • Bridge deck overlay on the I-69 bridge over Baker Ditch, 3.24 miles north of S.R. 18
  • Bridge deck overlay on the I-69 bridge over the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks and C.R. 450 N, 4.65 miles north of S.R. 18

In 2021, contractors are expected to remove the crossovers, as well as seed the area. Most of this work will occur off the roadway, on the shoulders or in the median.

INDOT reminds drivers to use caution when traveling through any active construction zone. A reduced speed limit will be in effect and strictly enforced.

The project is scheduled to be completed in late 2021, weather permitting. The contract was awarded to INDOT contractor Primco for $34.7 million.
