World book day

Thursday 5 March 2020 is World Book Day!  Get involved…Celebrate stories.  Love reading.

It’s never too early to get children interested in books.  The Imagination Library is a fantastic scheme open for all children in North Lincolnshire aged from birth to four years 10 months.  Each month a carefully selected book will be posted to your child and the book is totally free.  However, you must register to get your free books.  Either visit your local library or children’s centre or follow this online link

For details of your local library click here.

It's Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

ovarian cancer

Ovarian Cancer Month takes place in March.  7300 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year so it's important to raise awareness of the disease.  By raising awareness more women might be able to spot the symptoms earlier and the earlier a woman is diagnosed with ovarian cancer the more likely it is that she will respond to treatment.

The Target Ovarian Cancer website has information and guides regarding symptoms and diagnosis.

The NHS website is also a great source of information.

North Lincolnshire Fostering

Fostering

An outstanding place to foster

Taking the time to look into fostering is a first step towards a rewarding challenge for some people. Thank you for making that first step to help make a difference to a child’s life.

Fostering involves looking after children or young people in your own home while their own family is unable to do so. Some children may return to their birth families or other family members. Some may move on to a permanent home through adoption. Others may remain in foster care until they are ready to live independently.

People interested in becoming foster carers will be treated fairly, without prejudice and with respect at all times. Prospective foster carers are considered in terms of their capacity to look after children in a safe and responsible way that meets the child’s development needs.

Come along to a Fostering Information event:

  • 19 March 2020 at Church Square House, 30-40 High Street, Scunthorpe at 6pm
  • 22 April at Brigg Children’s Centre, Grammar School Road at 6pm
  • 20 May at the Old School Inn, 10 Battle Green, Epworth at 6pm

Further information is available on the council website Fostering page

Independent Age - Moneywise

money

Money can be tight at times, especially once we retire and find ourselves living on a fixed income while our fuel bills, travel costs and general living expenses go up every year. Yet many older people are missing out on hundreds of pounds of entitlements they could be due, or paying over the odds for their bills.

Our guide could help you boost your income and cut your bills – by claiming benefits you may not have realised you’re entitled to, getting help with energy costs and shopping around to find the best deals for you.

Visit the Independent Age website for lots more useful advice.

Side by Side - for Dementia

football

What is Side by Side?

Side by Side is a volunteer-led service which helps people living with dementia to continue to play
active roles in their communities. The service helps them to lead fulfilling lives, and reduces
loneliness and isolation.

What’s your idea of a good time? Going to the football, catching a movie, a jog around the park, a
good old mooch around the shops? Whatever you love doing, Side by Side is our service to help
you keep involved with your community.

Your Side by Side volunteer will help you to keep on doing the things you love – and try new things
too. The idea is that you meet up, decide what you’d like to do, and then do it together. It’s all about
having fun and feeling good – you’ll both be making a big difference to each other’s lives.

If you are interested in accessing Side by Side or Volunteering for us, you can contact the local office on:
T: 01472 359 247 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm)
E: SidebySideNNEL@alzheimers.org.uk
Or you can contact our Customer Care Team number on: 0330 333 0804
(Monday to Sunday 8am till 10pm )

Join the Great British Spring Clean in North Lincolnshire

spring clean

Litter heroes in North Lincolnshire are being called on to take part in this year’s Great British Spring Clean between 20 March and 13 April 2020.

The biggest ever litter campaign gives people the opportunity to get involved in cleaning up their community and country to really make a difference.

North Lincolnshire Council has backed the campaign for many years to encourage people to get outdoors, get active and help clear up rubbish that lives around communities.

Last year’s Great British Spring Clean in North Lincolnshire saw around 400 volunteers from 40 groups collect over 1,000 large bin bags full of rubbish.

Join the ever growing band of people who have had enough of other people’s litter, are willing to donate their time to help clear it up and want to see an end to littering.

If you would like to get involved in the big clean up, get in touch with the council on 01724 297670 or email neighbourhoodservices@northlincs.gov.uk. The council can offer support including providing litter picking equipment and removing the rubbish you collect.

In addition to making the council aware, register your involvement online. This will ensure that all clean-ups in North Lincolnshire are recognised and your clean-up is shown on the map along with others taking place up and down the country. You will also be able to download the guide, get advice and tips.

Volunteer Independent Visitors - could this be you?

volunteers

Do you have a few hours to spare and feel that you could help support a child or young person?

Volunteer Independent Visitors are needed in North Lincolnshire to support a child or young person, and make a difference.

An Independent Visitor is a volunteer who spends time with a child or young person who is in the care of the local authority and who has little or no contact with the adults in their family.

Through doing activities and going on trips out together it is hoped that volunteers will become a mentor and friend that will provide the young person with a support that is independent of the ‘professionals’ within their life. Volunteers are there just for them and meet about once a month for a few hours.

People interested in becoming an Independent Visitor volunteer can find out more details on the Independent Visitors page, by emailing independentvisitors@northlincs.gov.uk, or calling 01724 297256 for an informal chat about the role.

Changing Places toilets

Although there are a vast number of accessible toilets in the region, standard accessible toilets do not meet the needs of every person with a disability.  Changing Places toilets are different to standard disabled toilets as they have extra features, special equipment and more space to provide a safe and clean environment for the people who use them.  A list of Changing Places toilets can be found on the council website
