construction updates

Construction Updates: West Sammamish River Bridge and Walkways & Waterways

West Sammamish Bridge Construction:
Ceccanti Inc., the contractor for the West Sammamish Bridge project, has completed all the necessary paper work and was issued “Notice to Proceed”. The bridge construction project is scheduled to begin in early March. In advance of construction, utility companies are relocating some of their facilities (vaults, conduit, etc.) that are in conflict with construction zones. Occasional night work will be allowed as the least disruptive option for traffic. The right-of-way on the south side of NE 175th St., just east of 68th Ave NE, will serve as a staging area for Ceccanti, Inc. When driving through that area, please be prepared to allow additional time to reach your destination or plan for alternative routes.

Walkways & Waterways:
As with the bridge, utility companies are relocating some of their facilities in the Juanita Dr. and 68th Ave NE corridor in advance of the construction that will install bike lanes and sidewalks on these voter-approved transportation projects.

Financial Sustainability Plan Update

Due to State-imposed limits on property tax growth, flat growth in other revenues, unfunded state and federal mandates, and other factors, the City’s operating revenues are not keeping pace with the cost of doing business. As a result, the City of Kenmore faces an upcoming structural deficit in its operating budget (General Fund and Street Fund). While the City has been adopting balanced budgets, operating expenditures could start exceeding revenues as soon as 2021. Re-evaluating priorities, services and revenues can help bring a budget with a structural deficit back into balance.

Last fall, the City Council approved a process for creating a Financial Sustainability Plan and a charter for a task force of community members to assist in this work. The task force is meeting now to review the issue, determine the problem, and advise the City Manager. Financial experts Management Partners are also preparing for a report on the City’s options for addressing the issue. The City Council is expected to review options and recommendations in May or June of this year.

There will be a public informational session and presentation on the evening of March 17. Stay tuned for meeting details.

Monitoring & Preparing for Coronavirus

The City of Kenmore is continuing to work with local and state agencies to monitor the spread and impact of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19), and prepare for the potential of a future local outbreak. Although the risk to people in King County from COVID-19 remains low, with no confirmed local cases and only 1 confirmed case in Washington State, it is increasingly likely that it will continue to spread in the United States.

What can you do to protect yourself and prepare?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends following the same everyday disease prevention routine that helps protect against colds and the flu: Wash your hands, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, and clean and disinfect frequently touched objects. More prevention tips can be found on the CDC website at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/prevention-treatment.html

Public Health – Seattle & King County has a website with up-to-date information and educational resources, www.kingcounty.gov/ncov. Because the situation is rapidly evolving, people can check back frequently for the latest information.
