Karen Keys-Gamarra's Newsletter

Hello 2020 and Happy Black History Month!

We've begun another amazing year at FCPS and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to represent our students and families in this new term!

In just a few short months the Board has already addressed multiple significant concerns. In addition to passing a tentative budget and the Capital Improvement Plan, Board Chair Karen Corbett Sanders and I presented a forum topic urging my colleagues to use our independent auditor to conduct a review of our Special Education Services. As the Audit Committee Chair I am pleased that this action received unanimous support.

Additionally, after the Board took a serious look at our naming policy, my colleague from the Lee District, Vice Chair Tamara Derenak Kaufax and I co-sponsored a forum topic to move forward with the name change of Lee High School. We've worked to improve procedures to assure that our community has a meaningful opportunity to participate in the discussion and that appropriate notice of the action is provided. I'll be consulting with our community to ensure that we have a discussion that includes historical context.

It's been my pleasure to travel across our county to meet so many constituents. Just a few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting our Senators, the honorable Tim Kaine and Mark Warner in recognizing Black History month.  I’ve also had the opportunity to:

* attend the STAMP MLK give together event, which brought residents together for a "Day of Service";

* serve as the moderator for the Equity Symposium, where we focused on mental health supports for our students;

* attend the Mountain View HS Graduation;

* and work with students regarding the expansion of STEM afterschool opportunities.

It is truly a pleasure to have this opportunity to hear the voices of so many and work to implement actions to address your concerns.

Below are a few photos of my travels across the county.

Please join me at my office hours as I would treasure the opportunity to hear your concerns.
