Greetings Braddock District Residents,
As the Memorial Weekend is about to commence, I want to provide you with some important information related to outdoor activities as well as recent FCPS news. In particular, I want to spotlight that FCPS is reopening its high school stadium tracks and tennis courts for individual exercise, in conjunction with the Park Authority's recent actions. I am also pleased to announce yesterday's School Board adoption of the FY21 budget. Like the County Board of Supervisors, the School Board is directing its new funding towards addressing the COVID19 impact on our students, teachers and staff. In addition to these topics, I hope the following information about countywide COVID19 test sites, "It Takes A Village" good deeds in our community, and a new County program launched to offer additional youth activities will be of interest.

And finally, I want to offer an important recognition as we approach Memorial Day weekend. While this annual holiday is often associated with the start of the summer season, I want to convey my solemn gratitude to the men and women who have died in service for our great country. May we never forget their ultimate sacrifice.

School Board Adopts FY21 Budget
Yesterday, the School Board adopted the FY21 Budget during its Regular Business Meeting (May 21, 2020).
The School Board acknowledged the COVID19 crisis' significant economic impact on school funding, and its commitment to target new funding to support students, families and employees in the upcoming school year. As this year's Budget Chair, I want to thank Superintendent Brabrand and his budget team for their diligent and collaborative work with County Executive Bryan Hill and his staff to ensure the most immediate needs of our school system can be met. I also want to express appreciation for my School Board colleagues for their tireless work in passing a budget that focuses on providing vital services for our students and families, as well as protects our hardworking employees. And finally, I want to thank the Board of Supervisors for their deep commitment to our public schools. Their valuable support is essential as FCPS continues to address the challenges brought about by the current health crisis.

FCPS to Re-Open Tracks and Tennis Courts for Public Use |

Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is following the Fairfax County Park Authority’s phased re-opening process by allowing individuals to exercise on high school stadium tracks and tennis courts beginning Friday, May 22.
All visitors are urged to practice health department safety guidelines, including social distancing, and to keep groups to ten people or less.
No scheduled or organized team activities are permitted at this time. Playgrounds, basketball courts, and athletic fields are to remain closed in alignment with the Park Authority until further notice.

COVID-19 Testing Sites
COVID-19 testing is available in Fairfax and surrounding jurisdictions. If you or someone you know is looking for a testing site, please visit this Fairfax County webpage for instructions and a list of locations administering the COVID-19 test for patients with or without insurance coverage (test fees are also listed).
NCS Community and Teen Centers Go Virtual!
Last week, Fairfax County launched NCS Connects, designed to emulate the experience of visiting a Community or Teen Center. The platform was created for youth and teens of all abilities, grades 1-12.
The current activities include Bookworm Workout for young children, Exploding Lunch Bag for grades 6-12, and Rock Painting for all ages, among others. The platform also kicks off with two videos: a circuit training workout for teens, and a special message to youth featuring more than a dozen NCS staff.
To create even more engagement, NCS Connects will also feature a new social challenge each week. For the first challenge – Virtual Spirit Week on May 25-29 – participants will share themed photos on Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag #NCSconnects. Ideas for future challenges include cooking and art contests, scavenger hunts and online gaming.

2020 All-Virginia
Middle School Chorus
Seventy-three students from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) middle schools were named to the 2020 All-Virginia Middle School Chorus.

This group had been scheduled to perform on Saturday, April 25, at the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Richmond, but the performances were cancelled due to the COVID-19 crisis.
Students from throughout Virginia went through a rigorous audition process to compete for a spot in the chorus. Students selected for this ensemble were to have rehearsed with a nationally recognized expert conductor to prepare for their performance.
