Clinically extremely vulnerable people in Tier 4 areas are advised to follow shielding advice - if this applies to you Hampshire County Council will contact you directly.

Cllr Richard Millard, Leader of EHDC - We must do what we can to contain the spread of coronavirus

I've just heard that East Hampshire will move into Tier 4 from Boxing Day (00:01 on Saturday December 26).  I know this will be difficult for many of us as it will further reduce our social interactions but it is so important that we do everything we possibly can to contain the spread of coronavirus. So please follow the new rules, even if it is hard. Tier 4 means that non-essential retail will have to close so this will also have a big impact on our local businesses who have already suffered so much this year. I'd like to reassure you that we are doing everything we possibly can to support you and help in any way we can.  It's going to be a Christmas unlike any other, but if we all follow the new rules then together we will get through this and I very much hope that 2021 will be a brighter year for us all.

South African strain

A new strain of the virus has been linked to South Africa.

Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, today said: "Anyone in the UK who has been in South Africa in the past fortnight, and anyone who has been in close contact with anyone who has been in South Africa in the last fortnight, must quarantine immediately

"By quarantine, I mean they must restrict all contact with any other person whatsoever.

"We will be changing the law to give this legal effect imminently.

"These measures are temporary, while we investigate this further new strain, which is currently being analysed at Porton Down."
