COUNCILMEMBER ANITA BONDS SUBMITS RESOLUTION

IN SUPPORT OF DC STATEHOOD

TO NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF STATE LEGISLATORS

Councilmember Anita Bonds (At-large) has submitted a resolution to the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL) calling on members from across the United States to “support .... the residents of the District of Columbia with the same rights ...enjoyed by all other residents of America. Including, legislation to grant the District local budget autonomy, legislative autonomy, and statehood.”

The resolution is the first time that the NCSL gathering of elected state legislators will address the disenfranchisement of 660,000 District of Columbia residents and the first time that a bipartisan group of legislators from several states will consider supporting DC self-determination since Congress passed the “District of Columbia Voting Rights Amendment” Constitutional Amendment in 1978, which failed to be ratified by 38 states (3/4ths) within the seven year time-frame.

As a long-time statehood activist who served on the DC State Constitutional Convention in 1974, I remain committed to highlighting the inequities that Americans in the Nation’s Capital endure and will continue to educate and build support for DC Statehood across the nation,” stated Councilmember Bonds. Adding, “Taxation Without Representation meant a lot in 1776 and it means the same today.”

The Annual NCSL Legislative Summit will be held in Seattle, Washington from August 3-6. The resolution will be required to pass the Law, Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee by three-fourths approval of state representatives present before it can be sent to the general session where it must receive three-fourths approval of state representatives present. Councilmembers Charles Allen and Vincent Orange will also attend the conference. DC Vote will exhibit at the conference. The resolution can be viewed by visiting here.
