The House of Representatives recognizes that workplace safety is critical to our employees, employers, and economic prosperity as a state. A group of Representatives have issued a resolution to declare April 13 and 14, 2021, as Michigan Workplace Health and Safety Days in the state of Michigan.

Over 3,500 businesses across Michigan have participated in the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) COVID-19 Workplace Safety Ambassador Program since September 2020.
MIOSHA in partnership with NSF International provides workplace safety ambassadors who help Michigan businesses better implement COVID-19 regulations and best practices. Overall, the Ambassadors have reported high rates of willingness to participate, compliance with COVID-19 workplace safety requirements, and eagerness to enhance protocols as suggested by the consultants.
To better capture the business response, a new MIOSHA video including three from specific business owners, documents the Ambassador Program and highlights several Michigan businesses speaking about the benefits of the program.

April 13-14, 2021
The 2021 Michigan Safety Conference, April 13-14, will be held virtually and will still offer the quality programming, information on health and safety products and services and networking that it has for the past 90 years.

Drive Safe. Work Safe. Save Lives.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) was selected to host the 2021 NWZAW event. A small in-person, invite-only event that will follow all COVID-19 guidelines will be held in Metro-Detroit and streamed across the internet for all interested parties. Mark your calendars for the NWZAW 2021 event on April 27, at 11:00 a.m.

“Go Orange Day,” Wednesday, April 28, 2021, is especially noteworthy.
“Go Orange Day” is to remember and show support to the families of victims who have lost their lives in work zones. MIOSHA encourages everyone to show support in this cause by wearing orange. MIOSHA would like to encourage all employers to use the NWZAW as an opportunity to speak with their employees in all industry sectors about the hazards in the roadway.

Additionally, MIOSHA is encouraging employers to submit photos of their workers wearing orange (polos, safety vests, high-visibility tee-shirts, etc.) while working and/or during a group pose (social distancing and proper PPE is required). MIOSHA will use the submitted photos in a collage to commemorate the NWZAW event being hosted in Michigan.

Vehicular incidents are considered struck-by events. In 2018, Michigan had 38 workplace fatalities, nine of which were incidents involving workers being struck by vehicular equipment. Five of these incidents were in various occupations of general industry operations where the employee was in the roadway. In 2019, Michigan had 37 workplace fatalities, six fatalities were the result of struck-by incidents while an employee was in/adjacent to the roadway. In 2020, Michigan experienced 64 workplace fatalities, five of these fatalities involved a vehicle striking a worker in the roadway. To date in 2021, one worker has been killed in the roadway. Reducing struck-by-events and deaths aligns with MIOSHA’s Strategic Plan for General Industry and Construction.

To Prevent Falls in Construction
 The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR) are holding a 2021 National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction: Official Kick-off Event on May 3 at 1:00 p.m. Register for the webinar kick-off event.
To date, there have been 64 work-related fatalities reported to MIOSHA in 2020. The information below shares preliminary details about the most recent fatalities reported to MIOSHA which are believed to be covered by the MIOSH Act. The description reflects information provided to MIOSHA at the initial report of the incident and is not the result of the official MIOSHA investigation.
Preliminary summaries of the most recent 2020 incidents:
The 60-year-old employee worked in the IT department at a local hospital. The department had several employees that were COVID-19 positive and the deceased was included as part of the hospital’s contact tracing investigation. The employee began experiencing symptoms on Nov. 26-27 and tested positive for COVID-19 on Nov. 28. He was admitted to the emergency department/ICU on Dec. 2, with shortness of breath and experienced other health complications while in the hospital. The employee remained hospitalized until his passing on Dec. 18, 2020.
