On April 1st, the Planning Commission celebrated its 2,000th meeting. In order to commemorate this milestone, Eric Holcomb, who serves as the executive director of CHAP and the Historic and Architecture Preservation Division chief, provided Planning Commission attendees with a thoughtful overview of the history of urban planning in Baltimore City.
Holcomb began by explaining that the first plans for Baltimore were drawn up in 1729, then walked the Planning Commission through some of the decisions and developments that created the Baltimore that we know today. Holcomb covered various historic moments and trends, from the institution of the current iteration of the Planning Commission in 1939, to the history of redlining in Baltimore, to population growth and depopulation over time. The presentation ended with a recap of some of the Planning Department’s current projects; the INSPIRE Plan, Baltimore Green Network, and the Planning Academy. The Baltimore Black Artist Fair Begins on April 30th!
The Black Artist Fair presented by Comcast is an educational and interactive event designed to connect Black creatives from the Greater Baltimore Area to resources and services to further enhance their crafts and careers. Over the course of a weekend, artists will be invited to explore professional and creative workshops, consultations, panel discussions, and keynotes speakers. The fair will also highlight the work of local artists across genres. Our organization believes it is necessary to curate a space specifically for Black Creatives to combat the issues of equity around access to these types of resources and opportunities.
