Training Talk!

The apprentice learns the skills of the trade through paid on-the-job training, working alongside an experienced journeyman who passes on the skills that he or she has learned over the years. In addition to the on-the-job training the apprentice receives related classroom instruction that produces competency and pride that leads to becoming a true craftsman. Some Maine companies currently hiring for apprentices are:  Cianbro, Johnson & Jordan, Reed & Reed, IBEW 1253, IBEW 567, IW-7, UA Local 716 and SMW 17.

Thinking of going back to school? Be sure to research all sources of financial aid. Visit FAME’s scholarship search, or other sites such as FastWEB or The College Board. It is also important to research civic organizations, parents’ employers, the military, as well as high school guidance offices.

Veterans; be sure to check out the new GI Bill program, Veteran Rapid Retraining Assistance Program, or VRRAP, it was designed to pay for 12-months of training in high-demand jobs!
