Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Art All Night is back in person, and for the first time ever, the festival will be activated for two nights!

On Friday and Saturday night, we'll celebrate the artists and creatives who make Washington, DC the capital of creativity. With activations popping up across all eight wards, in more than 18 neighborhoods, this is one more opportunity to support local artists and small businesses.

Art All Night

The fun has already started, so go to dcartallnight.org to find an activation site near you

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

Update on COVID-19 Booster Shots

Vaccine Buddies

As the District remains very focused on ensuring all eligible residents have received at least their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, Mayor Bowser and DC Health are also encouraging members of the community who are eligible for a booster shot to get their third dose.

This week’s recommendations around booster shots are specific to individuals who received the Pfizer vaccine and who received their second dose at least six months ago.

The CDC now recommends:

  • people 65 years and older should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series;
  • people who are residents in long-term care settings should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series;
  • people aged 50 to 64 with certain underlying medical conditions should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series;
  • people 18 to 49 who are at high risk for severe COVID-19 due to certain underlying medical conditions may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks; and
  • people aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks.

Residents who received the Pfizer vaccine earlier this year should start making a plan to receive their booster shot: Find your vaccine card or access your vaccine record by visiting myir.dc.gov, call your healthcare provider to discuss your options for a booster, or visit vaccines.gov to find a location near you. Residents who need support can call 855-363-0333. Eligible residents can go to one of the 153 locations around the city that offer the safe, free, and effective COVID-19 vaccines.

The New Franklin Park Is Open

Franklin Park

The new Franklin Park is open! Today, Mayor Bowser celebrated the grand reopening of Franklin Park in downtown DC. The renovation of the park is the culmination of a partnership shaped in 2012 between DC Government, the National Park Service, and the Downtown DC Business Improvement District. The project was made possible by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s 2019 bill to authorize the Mayor of Washington, DC and the Director of NPS to enter into cooperative management agreements for the operation, maintenance, and management of NPS-owned properties in DC.

After a $21 million, District-funded renovation, the new Franklin Park includes a restaurant and pavilion, an expanded and restored fountain plaza, and a new children’s garden. Among the upgrades to the park, visitors will be able to enjoy ADA accessible sidewalks, a rich and diversified tree canopy, enhanced lighting, conversational and flexible seating, and active, flexible, and engaging green space.

New Children's National Research & Innovation Campus at Walter Reed

JLABS at Washington, DC

This week, Mayor Bowser toured the new Children’s National Research & Innovation Campus at Walter Reed. This one-of-a-kind research and innovation hub creates an ecosystem of top-tier partners and will produce nearly 1,000 new jobs.

The Mayor also welcomed JLABs @ Washington, DC, a 32,000-square-foot incubator housed at the new campus, to the District. The premier life science incubator is one of 13 around the world and a direct result of the Mayor’s delegation to Canada in September 2017 with Maryland Governor Larry Hogan and former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, where she toured a JLABS incubator and advocated for one in Washington, DC.
