MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers, together with Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) Secretary and CEO Missy Hughes, kicked-off Wisconsin Tech Month today at StartingBlock in Madison. Gov. Evers and WEDC Secretary and CEO Hughes were joined at the kick-off event by technology and entrepreneurship industry leaders like Nadiyah Johnson, founder and CEO of Jet Constellations, and Nora Roughen-Schmidt, executive director of StartingBlock, among many others.
“This tech month, we’re emphasizing the importance of promoting equity in the technology industry and showing our thanks to the folks who work day-in-and-day-out to make sure that people of all backgrounds are welcomed and supported in the field,” said Gov. Evers. “As a critical industry to Wisconsin’s future, it’s important that we commit ourselves to advancing diversity and inclusion in the technology industry so that every Wisconsinite has the resources, support, and opportunity to thrive.”
Throughout the month of October, organizations across the state like Jet Constellations’ Milky Way Tech Hub are working to promote and celebrate diversity in the technology industry. Organizations are using Wisconsin Tech Month to continue working to develop sustainable solutions to reduce racial and wealth achievement gaps and support underrepresented entrepreneurs through hosting events that promote equity, inclusion, and advocacy in the industry. “Whether it’s biotech, advanced manufacturing or computer science, Wisconsin entrepreneurs and businesses are constantly innovating,” said WEDC Secretary and CEO Hughes. “Now the job is to ensure that all Wisconsin residents are able to take part in the amazing opportunities that technology opens up.”
In demonstration of Wisconsin's commitment to supporting equity and inclusion in the technology industry, Gov. Evers proclaimed October 2021 as “Wisconsin Tech Month.” A copy of the proclamation is available here.
