Dear Washingtonians,
A fair shot means different things to different Washingtonians. For some, it means affordable housing or a robust and equitable public transportation system, for others it means accessible job training programs and safer neighborhoods. For me, a fair shot means all of those things and more. It means that regardless of who you are or where you live, if you work hard and play by the rules, you can succeed in Washington, DC.
This week, we're spreading the word about two new programs designed to give more Washingtonians a fair shot.
The #FairShot Free Rides Taxi-to-Rail program was launched in June to help improve transportation equity in neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River. This innovative program provides passengers with a free taxicab ride of up to $10 to or from ten Metro stations. Last week, we expanded the program to also include grocery stores, libraries, and recreation centers. Learn more HERE.
Additionally, this week, we announced a $1.3 million investment to relaunch DC Opportunity Accounts. This 4:1 matched savings program helps DC residents save up to $7,500 to pay for a variety of expenses, including education, first-time home purchases, small business development, and retirement.  On Thursday, August 22, join Mayor Bowser, the Mayor’s Office on Women’s Policy and Initiatives, and the DC Commission for Women to celebrate the 5th Annual Women’s Equality Day Celebration. This event, which will be at Hook Hall, celebrates the day women were granted the right to vote (August 26, 1920), when the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was certified as law.

 To help meet the District’s zero waste goal of diverting 80 percent of waste from landfills and waste-to-energy facilities, District residents are encouraged to participate in the Food Waste Drop-Off Program. Nine farmers markets across the city are designated as sites where residents can drop off their food waste for free.
Mayor Bowser introduced the Food Waste Drop-Off Program in 2017 as part of her comprehensive Zero Waste DC 2.0 Plan to make the District the most sustainable city in the country. The weekly collection program has already collected more than 700,000 pounds of fruit and vegetable scraps from more than 1,700 households.

 This month, the MuralsDC program will begin creating six new murals in Wards 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7. A new mural on the popular 14th and U Street corridor will include possibly the city’s tallest portrait, featuring jazz musician and native Washingtonian Buck Hill, who passed away in 2017.
MuralsDC is funded by the Department of Public Works and works in cooperation with the Commission on the Arts and Humanities. It is one of several tools used to beautify District corridors and celebrate the art of graffiti. Since 2007, the program has installed more than 80 murals in every ward of the District on building walls donated by commercial property owners or DC government.

This week’s District Minute features stories about the Don't Wait, Vaccinate campaign, the Kids Ride Free program, and ribbon cuttings for new and modernized DC Public Schools.
 The DC Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) promotes the safe operation of motor vehicles in Washington, DC. The agency serves thousands of residents and visitors each day, and conducts more than 170,000 vehicle inspections each year.
The DMV has an opening for a Motor Vehicle Inspector. This position is responsible for performing necessary vehicle safety inspections on a variety of vehicles, such as commercial and private passenger cars, taxicabs, trucks, buses, tractor-trailers, motorcycles, and specific types of mobile construction equipment.
